Corporal is the fourth enlisted rank in the UNSC Marine Corps and the UNSC Army, and is the lowest rank of the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). It is equal in rank to Petty Officer Third Class in the UNSC Navy and Senior Airman in the Air Force.
Promotion to Corporal traditionally confers a large jump in authority and responsibility compared to promotion from Private through Lance Corporal.
While both the UNSC Army and the UNSC Marine Corps share the rank of Corporal, the UNSC Marine Corps promotes Lance Corporals directly to Corporal. Most of the time in the Army, Privates First Class (which are E-3) are promoted to Specialist, and then directly to Sergeant. In some cases, however, they may get promoted to Corporal instead of Specialist depending on combat tours or other military jobs.

Corporal is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional infantry grade, Corporal is an enlisted rank in a fighting organization, below a sergeant and above a private (which is only an actual rank in some cases). In comparison to naval ranking systems, this rank is marginally equivalent to the naval petty officer or yeoman ranks.
This grade exists in some form in many rank arrangements, such as the Bajoran Militia and the Earth MACOs in the 2150s.
Corporal was an enlisted military rank, usually in army units. It was usually higher than a private or trooper, and lower than a sergeant.
In the Imperial Army, a corporal was second-in-command of a nine-man squad, selected and recommended for the position by the sergeant. As the senior of the squad's eight troopers, he was known as the "one-man".
The rank was also used in planetary police forces, such as Cularin's Office of Peace and Security.[1]

In the real world, the rank of corporal is generally a relatively junior NCO grade.
In the British Household Cavalry, however, all NCOs and warrant officers use variations on the rank of corporal. The rank of Staff Corporal, mentioned in Star Wars Galaxies material, is an element of this system, although only the rank name is actually canon.
