A standard American Continental Marine.

The Continental Marines (Active November 10, 1775 - June 1785) was the primary naval infantry force of the American Colonies during the American Revolutionary War of 1775 - 1783 to fight against the British Empire.

They were the predecessor of the United States Marine Corps, the UN Marine Corps, and the UNSC Marine Corps.

The main purposes of these Marines were to act as guards for the Commanding officers, engage in close quarters ship-to-ship combat, and lead amphibious shore parties.

The Continental Marines were established on November 10th, 1775, in the Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when the Continental Congress ordered the creation of the two Battalions of Marines.

Their first and only Commandant was Captain Samuel Nicholas and their first barracks was located in Philadelphia, PA.

It was during the First World War of the 20th Century that the nickname "Leathernecks" was adopted into widespread use, which referred to the collars of the uniforms that the American Marines wore during the Revolutionary period.
