A container is an object that the player can activate to bring up an inventory in which you can put in, or take out items from your inventory. Items placed in a container will disappear over time.(With the exception of containers in owned houses like My Megaton House)

Boxes are the most common Forge item. Boxes come in a variety of sizes. You can get small or double sized boxes, both come with or without holes. These can be found on many maps. You can stack these on top of each other then delete the bottom one and the top will float. There are a few other methods to do this.
Go into Forge on Last Resort. Then, find an area with nothing above it and flat ground. Place an open container (scenery) there. Make a portable gravity lift as well as deployable cover on the ground next to it. Turn into human mode then pick up the gravity lift and throw it in the container. Then pick up the deployable cover and jump in. Throw the cover on the gravity lift. You will take off. Look at the hole and enjoy the view. This is only temporary because once the gravity lift or deployable cover breaks, you fall.
Containers store stuff. Simple enough. There are two types of containers:
Most Wearable Containers are Backpacks. They all store 50 items, and are equipped in the backpack or bandolier slot. Note that you can store items in an unequiped backpack and can drop them in your house for cheap, if inelegant, storage. All backpacks can be renamed.
There are many varieties of Non-wearable Containers. Here are the currently known ones:
Note that to access the crafting station's container, or hopper, you must either select "Input Hopper" in the crafting process, or select "Open crafting station Hopper" from the corresponding tool's radial menu (it is a subchoice of "Start Crafting") Satchels and Cargo Pockets can be renamed, but Crafting stations must be named on creation. Unlocked containers are obtained when a Smuggler successfully slices Locked Containers

There are two types of containers: Item Containers and Liquid Containers. As their names indicate, an Item Container can only hold Items (not liquids), and a Liquid Container can only hold Liquids (not items).
Item containers have different capacities. Some containers can hold 20 items (Backpack), while other containers may only be able to hold 5 items (Present Box).
Some item containers can be carried in your backpack. Other item containers cannot. If you try to pick up a container that cannot be carried, you will see a message that says "you cannot take this item".
Fluid containers do not have an explicit capacity. They are either empty or they have a liquid in them.
Some liquid containers allow you to see the liquid that is inside them (Vial, Bucket, Trough, etc.), but some liquid containers do not change appearance when they have a liquid in them (Bottle, Brown Flask, Cup, etc).
