From The Vault

This article is about a place mentioned in Fallout 3. For the 13 pre-war U.S. commonwealths, see United States. For European organization of states, see European Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth is what is left of the pre-Great War American state of Massachusetts in New England[1]. While traditionally called a Commonwealth in itself, before the Great War Massachusetts was also part of the New England Commonwealth of the United States in the alternate history of the Fallout universe. Most of it is a war-ravaged quagmire of violence and despair like much of the rest of the former United States (and perhaps the rest of the world), but it is also where the mysterious Institute is located.

Organizations

The Institute is likely the descendant of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Little is known about the Institute other than that the scientists working in the sealed environment possess highly advanced technology and technological skills. The Institute has created true artificial intelligence (AI) and is capable of manufacturing androids.

Another organization active in the Commonwealth, the Railroad, functions in direct opposition to the Institute, as their goal is to free sentient androids from their creators.

Harkness, Dr. Zimmer and Armitage are from the Commonwealth.

During the events of Broken Steel, Dr. Li leaves the Capital Wasteland on a trip to the Commonwealth, apparently to clear her head after the final activation of Project Purity.

Tobar, captain of the Duchess Gambit, made frequent trips to the Commonwealth when his ferry was in better condition.

Appearances

The Commonwealth is mentioned in Fallout 3, The Pitt, Broken Steel, and Point Lookout.

Operational History

That year, 2525, the Commonwealth ferried the SPARTAN-II's to the Damascus Testing Facility on the planet Chi Ceti IV.[3] There, during the Battle of Chi Ceti, the Commonwealth successfully engaged the Covenant Light Cruiser Unrelenting[4] and, with the assistance of the Spartan-II's boarding party, and their new MJOLNIR Mark IV Armor, was able to destroy it.[5] The Commonwealth, however, was severely damaged in their first engagement against the Covenant Navy.[6]

Damage

The ship took heavy damage during the Battle of Chi Ceti. The damage was:

  • The communications and navigation dishes destroyed.
  • Armor in sections 3-7 down to four centimeters.
  • Hull breach in section three.
  • Ship AI memory core overloaded.
  • Leak in the port fuel tank.
  • Fire in sections one through twenty. (Atmosphere vented, fire extinguished.)
  • Port armor destroyed.
  • Decks two through seven in section one melted away. Decks two through five in sections three, four and five out of contact.
  • Deck thirteen destroyed.
  • Hull structure came close to "buckling" (integrity about to fail) and the MAC system was taken offline.
  • Reactor only able to output ten percent of rated output.

Despite the extensive damage to the Frigate, she was able to make it back to Reach without being destroyed. It is assumed that the ship was repaired and then returned to service against the Covenant's advances among the Outer Colonies and was then most likely destroyed, either during the Battle Of Reach or some other skirmish against the Covenant.
