The Combat Knife is a rather common melee weapon in Fallout 3. It is affected by the Melee Damage Bonus from Strength. It is one of the better low-level melee weapons, and can get around 3-4 strikes in VATS even with a reasonable number of AP and a fast swing speed outside of VATS. However it has extremely short reach, about that of an Unarmed weapon.

The combat knife itself has a single edge with a clipped point, with a serrated edge on the back. It is of the standard Bowie shape, and is really more of a utility knife than an actual weapon.

  • Combat Knives are found on random Raiders and Talon Company Mercs across the Wastelands.
  • Three combat knives may be found in the Regulators Shack.
  • The combat knife, with 10 luck, becomes an extremely potent weapon that crits almost once every 4 to 5 hits.
  • 13 Combat Knives in perfect conditions can be found in the Mobile Base Crawler's kitchen, middle deck (Broken Steel required).

  • Occam's Razor - A slightly stronger version of the Combat Knife, wielded by Talon Commander Jabsco.
  • Stabhappy - Stabhappy shares all of its stats with Occam's Razor, but has two principle differences. Firstly, the raider that holds it respawns, allowing infinite copies to be obtained. Stabhappy also deals an additional 50% damage to limbs.
  • Trench Knife (Operation: Anchorage add-on) - The Trench Knife's stats are identical to the regular Combat Knife. The only difference is a unique "knuckle-duster" skin.

Fallout Tactics

Combat Knife
damage: Swing: 6 - 14
Thrust: 7 - 18

Swing (AP: 3, R: 1)
Thrust (AP: 4, R: 1)

The following is based on Fallout Tactics and some details might contradict canon.

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel weapon
Combat Knife
damage: 11-19
damage type: Normal
hands req.: 1
value: $190
The following is based on Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and has not been confirmed by canon sources.
This military-issue cutting tool was designed for more than saw-ing rope. The Combat Knife tears through flesh, too, but it can't pierce strong armor.

A decent weapon at the beginning of Chapter 1, but once you reach Carbon Crater, it becomes very weak.

Van Buren

Combat Knife
damage: Thrust: 4-8 / Slash: 6-10
damage type: Normal
attack modes:
Thrust (AP: 9, R: 1)
Slash (AP: 12, R: 1)
min. Strength: N/A
hands req.: 1
weight: N/A
value: N/A
The following is based on Van Buren and has not been confirmed by canon sources.

  • The name of the Combat Knife in the description of Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics could be a reference to Sylvester Stallone's role as Rambo in the First Blood series. Rambo was known for carrying a large combat knife. (The name of the company, "SharpWit"'s, double meaning also seems to point to this.)
  • The Combat Knife of Fallout 3 seems similar in appearance to the KA-BAR combat knife that is currently used by most branches of the United States Military but there are several differences. KA-BAR's are not serrated, they have a differently shaped fuller (aka: blood groove) and they have a black finish (although it could have just worn off after 200 years of abuse).

The Combat Knife

The Close Quarters Combat Weapon System, otherwise known as the Combat Knife, is a multi-purpose infantry-sized knife used by the United Nations Space Command.

The multi-purpose combat knife has a 20 centimeter (7.9 inches) blade made of high carbon steel, coated for corrosion resistance and is 43.3 centimeters (1.42 feet) when sheathed. All UNSC troops are issued with a combat knife for close quarters combat or in situations when ammo is scarce.[1] It is also balanced for throwing. It only appears in the novels and on the backs of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers in Halo 2 and Halo 3, and in The Babysitter but not Halo: Combat Evolved.

Knives have been used in battle almost since the dawn of warfare, first as a sharp piece of rock, and then metal proved effective during a period of time where projectile weapons were not readily available. The combat knife later branched off and became a sword, while others used daggers. For thousands of years, knives and swords have been a weapon of choice for soldiers. Even after the invention of the firearm, knives were still used as bayonets for close-quarters-combat. Sabers were still issued in World War I. As war tactics shifted from trench warfare to attrition warfare, knives became last-resort weapons or simple tools. By 2553, the UNSC still uses knives, showing that such an easily accessible and created weapon still runs strong even thousands of years later.

One of the few times a combat knife can be seen in game is on the lower backs of ODSTs or on the left chest of the CQB chest plate armor permutation, though they are never used in combat. It also has a serrated edge like other combat knives as mentioned in Halo: The Fall of Reach. It currently represents certain difficulty levels in the Halo Trilogy. Normal has a single knife, Heroic has two crossed knives, and Legendary is represented by a shot Elite skull with two crossed knives. All of these symbols are placed over a shield with the Marathon logo engraved into it, and Easy is represented by the shield alone.

It also appears in a cutscene in Halo Wars where John Forge stabbed the Arbiter with the combat knife, giving him the chance to kill him with his own Energy Sword. It makes another appearance in a cutscene in Halo 3: ODST, when Buck uses it to stab a Brute Chieftain in the neck. Cal-141 uses one in The Babysitter to take out a Grunt quietly. Frederic-104 uses the knife in The Package to stab an Elite in the neck, killing him. In Halo: Reach it appears that the knife will be featured as the weapon used in assassination moves against unsuspecting enemies.

  • The ODST Action Figure, made by Joyride Studios, has a Combat Knife that can be held by the action figure's hand.
  • It was Frederic-104's trademark weapon, next to the MA5B Assault Rifle.
  • In Halo 3 Concept Art for EGM, a Spartan-II is shown with a Combat Knife on his/her right leg, however this was just an artistic look for the ODST armor.
  • A larger version of the combat knife, called the Machete, was intended to be used in the early Halo: CE build, but was cut before it made it into the final game.
  • The Spartan CQB chest permutation in Halo 3 multiplayer has a combat knife & it's holster attached to the left chest section.
  • In Halo Wars, John Forge has a combat knife named "Lucy", which he used to wound the Arbiter before killing him.
  • In Halo 3: ODST, the character Buck can be seen wearing a combat knife on his chest plate, which he uses to kill a Brute Cheiftan by stabbing it in the neck.
  • In the Halo: Reach world premiere cinematic, Emile-A239 is sharpening a Combat Knife using his shoulder plate.
