Unbranded cigarette boxes can be found on the ground on The Storm.

Cigarettes are a tobacco product manufactured and "smoked" by humans. Cigarettes and cigars have been around for centuries.

Cigarettes are protected from moisture damage by waterproof seals. They may have "ignition ends" which may light the cigarette without the need for external flammable implements. Cigarettes requiring more traditional means of ignition are also available.[1] It is also rather remarkable that cigarettes have survived as a produced good well into the 26th century, considering how today cigarettes are being phased out towards the goal of stopping smoke related cancer, it is however entirely possible that tobacco products in the Halo universe are scientifically designed to simulate the cigarettes of today but without any ill health effects. There were cigarette consumption ordinances in effect for ODSTs.[1] Tobacco Gum was an alternative product.

Contents

On the Island

Sawyer's cigarettes in the pilot episode.
  • Sawyer can be seen smoking a cigarette in "Pilot, Part 1". In "Tabula Rasa", he tries to pull one out and smoke it after trying (and failing) to euthanize Edward Mars. In "White Rabbit", he is briefly seen smoking a cigarette during the scene where Kate and Sayid question Sun and Jin on where they got their water from. In "Confidence Man" Sawyer is smoking and reading his letter when Jack interrupts and begins looking through his stash for the missing inhalers. It is the last time thus far Sawyer is seen smoking, presumably because he has run out of cigarettes and kicked his habit.
    • Hurley calls Sawyer a "Chain-smoking jackass" to Sayid in "Pilot, Part 2"
  • In a scene deleted from "Pilot, Part 1", but included on the season 1 DVD, Charlie asks a cigarette from Sawyer.
  • In "Confidence Man", Locke mentions that Sawyer could have set off the fireworks on a time-delay using a cigarette.
  • There's a cigarette among various debris on a table in The Pearl Station in "?" and "Exposé".
    • In the Pearl Orientation video, when Mark Wickmund is standing in between the two viewing chairs, you will see cigarette smoke rising up to his right.
Portsmouth and Bilson brands from the gas station in "The Long Con".
U.S. Marshal Edward Mars lights up a BREZZA in "What Kate Did"
BREZZA cigarettes uncovered by Charlie and Hurley in Sawyer's stash --("Flashes Before Your Eyes")
  • The cigarette found by Locke and Eko in The Pearl Station still has not found its righteous smoker. There is no indication whatsoever in "Exposé" that the cigarette was left by Paulo. Its very possible the cigarette is actually a joint, as the rest of the table appears to have marijuana buds on it.

Off-Island

  • Paulo has to use nicotine gum in order to quit; Nikki stops Paulo from smoking as they steal Zukerman's diamonds, noting that ashes could become evidence of their theft ("Exposé")
  • Cigarette stubs can be seen in the ashtray in Christian Shephard's hotel room in "White Rabbit". However, Christian has never been seen smoking in any of the episodes where he appeared, including the bar scenes where other people are smoking (e.g., in "Outlaws"), and according to the maid he has not slept in his hotel room in three days.
  • Charlie tried to steal an expensive, antique cigarette case from Francis Heatherton to pay for his drug habit.("Homecoming")
  • It is known that Sawyer smoked cigarettes prior to crashing on the Island. He is seen smoking in a bar in both "Confidence Man" and "Outlaws". He is also holding a cigarette when Cassidy visits him in jail during "Every Man for Himself".
  • Locke was trying to light up after his support group meeting in "Orientation".
  • Eric's Expert Service gas station, where Sawyer plays a con in "The Long Con", features Portsmouth and Bilson brand cigarettes. The Portsmouth is similar to Marlboro, and Bilson appears to be a type of Menthol due to its green Logo.
    • The origin of the Portsmouth brand is unknown. The name Portsmouth also appears on the Black Rock in Exodus as its home port, and is also mentioned in The Lost Experience in the Rachel Blake Copenhagen 02 entry. It is also the birthplace of Charles Dickens
    • Bilson cigarettes appeared in the 2002 film May (in the film and/or the DVD commentary). Also, George Bilson co-wrote the screenplay for the 1945 film What, No Cigarettes?. However the connection of these two possibilities to Lost are unknown. The brand may be named for Gregg Bilson, Sr. Bilson is the founder of Independent Studio Services, a company that produces props for the film and television industry. Examples of Bilson and Brezza cigarette packs can be found on the website of Studio Graphics, the company's graphic design and print shop.
  • The U.S. marshal Edward Mars smokes BREZZA brand cigarettes as he transports Kate in "What Kate Did", shortly before the accident involving Kate's black horse. The brand is seen again amongst Sawyer's stash in "Flashes Before Your Eyes".

Miscellaneous

  • Janelle Granger revealed in her ABC website diary that she quit smoking a year before the crash.
  • In the January 23, 2006 official podcast, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse promulgated a story that in the case of the cancellation of Lost, or if anything should happen to the creators, there is a script in the writer's room inside a glass box marked "In Case of Cancellation - Break Glass". This script is said to be a 4 page scene in which Joop, a talking orangutan, will explain every mystery on the Island while smoking a pipe.
