Christopher Priest (14th July 1943) is an award-winning British science fiction novelist who twice delivered scripts that would have written out companions from the original series. Though both of his scripts were rejected, he was paid for his commissions, and some of his ideas may have been incorporated into later scripts. He was the originally-assigned author of the scripts that became Warrior's Gate and Earthshock.

His script for Season 18 would have seen the Doctor and Romana leave E-Space only to become embroiled in a dark political thriller on Gallifrey, presumably surrounding Romana's failure to return home immediately after completing her assignment to retrieve the Key to Time. This script was called Sealed Orders.

Meanwhile, his Season 19 offering was called The Enemy Within, a title later associated with Doctor Who (1996). This story would have been largely TARDIS-based, involving an enemy that arose literally from within the heart of the old Type 40. After he delivered the scripts, he was asked to re-write them so as to allow for the departure of Adric. He complied, but when John Nathan-Turner asked for a third round of re-writes, he requested that he be paid for the additional work. JNT refused, and the acclaimed science fiction writer — who now had spent considerable time developing two stories for Doctor Who without either of them making it to the production stage — stopped talking to the JNT-helmed production office.

His most widely-known work may be The Prestige, which was adapted into a film in 2006, featuring the Batman Begins team of stars Christian Bale and Michael Caine along with director Christopher Nolan.
