The New Guardians, originally known as "the Chosen", were a group of people selected by Herupa Hando Hu and Nadia Safir during the events of Millennium to receive powers and function as a new superhero team. Members of the Chosen were selected from several nationalities to form a superhero group representative of the entire human race.

The Chosen is the name the White Mantle give to those marked by the Eye of Janthir as possessing True Sight, and therefore have great potential. Every year, the White Mantle apply the Test of the Eye to find all people marked as being gifted. These young people are supposedly then escorted by the White Mantle to the Temple of the Unseen to study under the Grand Masters of the White Mantle.
Warning: The following text contains spoilers relating to the plot of Prophecies.
It is later on discovered that this is a hoax. The White Mantle are indeed looking for people with great potential but they do not take them to study, instead they brutally sacrifice them on Bloodstones. This is not just over-zealous fanaticism, there are two reasons the White Mantle do this:
You find out in the Sanctum Cay mission that your character is in fact one of the chosen.

During The Wilds (mission), 9 Chosen are captured by Maguuma Spiders led by the Spider Queen. Players arrive somewhat late to save them, as 8 are already dead. Saving at least the one remaining is the last objective of The Wilds mission.
