History

The Cheyenne-class was a 24th century design, consisting of a commonly-used type of saucer section, with four warp nacelles attached by branching pylons to the aft saucer.

One of the famous members of this starship class was the USS Ahwahnee, lost at the Battle of Wolf 359. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II")

Background

The Ahwahnee model was built for the battle sequence in "The Best of Both Worlds" and later described to Star Trek fans by Michael Okuda's appearances at conventions, where he showed slide with images of the behind-the-scenes models.

Apocrypha

The RPG The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon, published by Last Unicorn Games after they had lost their Star Trek license lists the USS Periyar and USS Utrecht as Challenger-class vessels. LUG's Ship Recognition Manual also lists the USS Paiute and USS Haida.

The Cheyenne class was a Federation starship class that saw service during the 24th century. The class was one of the few classes to have more than two warp nacelles, like the Constellation-class it had four nacelles.

At least one Cheyenne-class starship, the USS Ahwahnee, was at the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2367. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II")

Fanon

Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet

The class was designed as a light cruiser and entered service in 2361. It was one of the heaviest light cruisers fielded by Starfleet. This saw it serve as an escort and patrol vessel. During the Dominion War they were tasked with supporting larger vessels and acted as the secondary anchors of wings, some even led smaller wings. USS Cheyenee Operations Manual

Designed as an exploratory cruiser the class entered service in 2341. (USS Cheyenne Operations Manual)

In 2354, Station Salem-One (aka Shadowstar Station) was the site of a Tholian attack. Among the Federation starships present at the station was the USS Apache. (USS Cheyenne Operations Manual)
