Chain Spell is the Red Mage two-hour ability in Final Fantasy XI. As with all two hours, it is available from level 1 on up. The ability, when activated, will last for 30 seconds. During this time, all spells cast by the Red Mage have next-to-no cast time and recast time is reduced to 0 seconds for all spells as well. All spells that are cast do still use MP, so the effectiveness of this ability is limited somewhat by the Red Mage's MP pool left. This can be extended, though, once the Red Mage has access to Convert essentially adding their HP pool to their spellcasting capacity. Unlike other two-hour abilities within Final Fantasy XI which have a single use only, Chainspell exemplifies the versatility of the Red Mage by being a versatile, and powerful, ability on its own. Common uses are forming a defensive barrier through Blink and Stoneskin, obliterating a foe with the highest tier of Elemental Magic available, or recovering from a full party wipe with Chainspell-Raise. Magic gaining from the Red Mage's subjob, including songs and Ninjutsu, may also be instantly cast, allowing, with the proper subjob, Chainspell-Drain/Aspir and the ever-popular endgame Chainspell-Stun tactics.

Anybody up against a Red Mage enemy boss beware, as Chainspell is lethal in the hands of an opponent. This includes the infamous Red Mage Maat fight.
