History

Arani Desai was born in India into a life of wealth and privilege. Due to the death of her mother during childbirth, Arani's father Ashok rejected her even though she possessed an excellent intellect and athleticism. Arani ran away from home after her father went insane. Life on the streets in Calcutta made Arani deathly ill until she was rescued by young American Dr. Niles Caulder. He gifted her with immortality on their wedding day and left her in the Himalayas while he tried to evade General Immortus.

Arani waited and realized that the serum augmented her powerfully, so that she could control her core temperature and project quantities of heat and cold. This ability, coupled with the mysticism and her monastery training made Arani a formidable martial artist. Discovering the death of the Doom Patrol, she created her own team to initially protect herself from General Immortus, who had momentarily restored his youth by experimenting upon Arani and torturing her. Arani then used the team to seek out her husband, whom she believed was alive.

During her leadership of the Doom Patrol, the team discovered Negative Man was a hostage of her now demonically controlled father Ashok Desai, now renamed Kalki. Like the terrorist known as Kobra, Ashok believed it was his destiny to bring about the Kali Yuga. Ashok Desai had originally worked with Niles Caulder to develop the immortality serum that Caulder would later perfect and use on Arani. Ashok tested an early version of the mutagenic serum on himself. The formula triggered his metagene, and mutated his body, driving him insane. He was transformed into a living portal to a nether dimension that he believed was "hell."

He and Caulder devised a suit of armor to contain his deteriorating body and to control the dimensional portal. Kalki had established a hidden base on the island of Jamaica from which he intended to launch a satellite designed to eliminate all life on earth. Kalki died when Celsius damaged his armor, causing the "demons" on the other side of its portal to turn on him and drag his body through to the other side.

Celsius was the only member left fighting against an evil Lord of Chaos, hand in hand with Power Girl. Her arctic cold blast exploded the superheated Metallo after he managed to control Robotman's actions to battle Superman. Arani later discovered that Niles Caulder was still alive and that Valentina Vostok was a covert operative for the United States government.

When Niles came out of hiding, he declared they were never married, although he would later retract that statement. During Grant Morrison's run on the title, Niles Caulder revealed that he and Arani had indeed been married, but like the other members of the team, he manipulated her for his own needs. He also admitted to experimenting on her with his immortality serum.

Celsius died during Invasion! fighting the Alien Alliance in the Arctic Circle. She sacrificed herself attempting to destroy a Gil'Dishpan spacecraft, and was killed by their fusion reactor. Her teammates were too late to save her, lest they would be killed themselves. Unfortunately, this was a futile gesture, and her actions were implied to be caused by a deteriorated mental state, possibly even self-destructive. The team claimed victory over a great number of enemies that day, but they still consider the battle a tragedy.[1]

The Celsius

The Celsius is the party’s primary airship in Final Fantasy X-2 and the mobile base of operations for the Sphere Hunter group; the Gullwings. The party’s missions begin and end onboard the ship, the facilities on which includes a bestiary/information encyclopedia, a Save Sphere, a shop/inn and four refilling treasure chests. As the game progresses many of the airship’s passengers will also offer their services to compliment the airships’, these include an additional shop and the ability to capture and store Chocobos.

Resurrection

One of the few airships in current operation around Spira the Celsius was unearthed in the cold north of Spira by the Al Bhed faction some time during the two year gap between ‘’Final Fantasy X’’ and ‘’Final Fantasy X-2’’, presumably the aiship was originally created some 1,000 years before game events; before Sin and the oppression of Machina.

In order to recover the Celsius when forming a Sphere Hunting organization, Brother and Buddy traveled to the cold north of Spira. At first, their attempt to find the airship appeared to be failing. However, they suddenly spotted a single gull in the sky and so decided to follow the gull. The gull managed to lead them to the airship, and so, based on this event, the group was named the Gullwings, after the bird.

Brother and Buddy began piloting the airship independently with Rikku and Shinra as crew after breaking away from Cid. They were soon joined by Paine, who wished to fly aboard the airship in return for her offering her combat skills. When Yuna also joined the group, wishing to find the truth behind a Recording Sphere Rikku had found, the "YRP" (Yuna, Rikku, Paine) task group was formed.

The Gulls’ Wings

The ship served to ferry the girls between missions across Spira and also acted as a temporary lodge for Gullwing associates; landing in the Thunder Plains the airship’s exposed deck served as a stage for one of Yuna’s concerts. While initially piloted by Brother and Buddy the Celsius was exclusively operated by the girls (Paine, Yuna and Rikku) during their adventure in the Yadonoki Tower.

Layout

The airship contains three floors plus an open-air deck, all accessed via a single elevator.

Deck

The airship’s open-air top deck can be accessed by the elevator and is a favored spot by the girls (Yuna, Rikku, Paine) to unwind, think or simply to seek privacy. It doesn’t matter if the airship was moving, they would still access and walk around the exposed deck with abandon.

Bridge

The bridge is the heart, brain and control hub of the ship. Shinra can provide information about Spira, or give tutorials about game mechanics. Rikku and Paine will share their thoughts about the area last visited, and Brother will comment on various things also. To travel around the World Map the player must talk to Buddy, the navigator, and choose a destination to travel.

Engine Room

The engines of the Celsius are housed here. A few treasure chests reside here that refill every new Chapter.

Cabin

In the cabin, Barkeep the Hypello runs the Gullstore, which is a basic shop, and will let Yuna sleep in one of the beds. Occasionally, other passengers on the Celsius will wait here. For example, O'aka XXIII will be waiting here to sell his wares if the Gullwings agreed to hold him during Chapter 1. Additionally, any chocobos caught using Shinra's ChocoPorter device in Chapter 4 will be found here. When O'aka first opens his shop on the Celsius, he sells basic items at a slightly reduced price. Once he sells 100,000 gil worth of items, enough to pay off his debt, he starts selling those items at a drastically reduced price.

Trivia

  • ’’Celsius’’ (also historically known as centigrade) is a temperature scale that is named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius. The degree Celsius (°C) can refer to a specific temperature on the Celsius scale as well as serve as a unit increment to indicate a temperature interval (a difference between two temperatures or an uncertainty).

Behind the scenes

The metric system is the primary form of measurement. However temperature units would not be named Celsius, Kelvin, or Fahrenheit, since they were named for men from Earth, but rather by centigrade or the more benign "standard" developed in the online Visual Guides. It is also interesting to note that the units of watt and joule are used for energy, though their names are derived from men from Earth as well.

The metric system also applies to quantities as well, beyond the standard SI prefix. See Large Numbers for more details.
