Cashiering was a military discipline measure for grave sanctions, usually reserved to commissionned officers and above. It involved one to be demoted to the rank of crewman (or private), stripping one of any and all honors he/she have received and breaking up all symbols of authority.

Background

The term cashiering origined from 17th century United Kingdom, where ground officers effectively purchased commissions. To be cashiered meant, in that context, losing all the money an officer spent into attaining a rank as well as being demoted.
