Carol is a female ghoul residing in the Underworld in 2277. Together with her partner Greta, she runs the Carol's Place hotel.
Contents |
Born in 2051, Carol was alive for the events of the Great War of 2077. Living in Washington DC, Carol and her father sought safety in a fallout shelter within the city proper, likely close to the Capitol Mall, after the Chinese first strike destroyed the West Coast. Carol had barely entered the shelter, and was turning back to find her father who had stopped to help another family, when the thermal pulse from a nuclear near hit flash-vaporized him. Carol ran back to hopefully find him, but instead only found his shadow permanently burned into a wall. Other survivors took her back into the shelter.
Carol did not stay in the shelter long, however. After the nuclear barrages ended, Carol ventured out into the city to seek a place to survive. Much of the city had either been reduced to rubble or was still aflame following the nuclear bombardment, but Carol was able to find safety in the relatively-undamaged Museum of American History's "Afterlife" exhibit. Carol has been there ever since.
Over time, more survivors gravitated to the Museum, almost all carrying stories of the lawlessness and chaos of the wasteland. This further convinced Carol to remain in the Museum. However, as time passed, Carol and many of the other survivors began noticing odd physiological changes, with dry, flaking skin being dominant. Although the rate at which the disorder progressed varied from person to person, the end result was identical: the entire population of the Museum had become ghouls.
Carol met another ghoul named Greta in the mid-2210s. For over sixty years, the two jointly ran Carol's Place, with Carol handling sleeping arrangements and Greta serving food. It is implied that Carol and Greta are either a couple, or that Carol sees Greta as a daughter.
At an unspecified time prior to the emergence of the Lone Wanderer from Vault 101, Carol had befriended and "adopted" a ghoul named Gob. This caused a small rift between Greta, which Carol would later ascribe to jealousy. Regardless of the cause, Gob would later move out, and the relationship between Carol and Greta would stabilize, though Carol would often worry about Gob's well-being.
Carol performs basic hotel keeping duties such as sweeping and renting out beds.
Carol will rent a bed to the Lone Wanderer. Although she is hesitant to talk about her experiences during and since the War, she will tell her story if encouraged.
Most often, Carol's existence is brought to light by Gob, the ghoul bartender of Moriarty's Saloon in Megaton. Gob saying, "If you ever get to Underworld, tell Carol I said hi." comes with an entreaty to bring news of him to her. While this is not a quest and carries no reward, it nevertheless points most to Underworld, at least eventually.
When talking to Carol, you can ask her about Gob. If you blew up Megaton and tell her that you killed Gob everyone in Underworld becomes hostile towards you; even if you have Charon's contract Charon still becomes hostile to you. If you didn't blow up Megaton, but killed Gob, only Carol will become hostile to you, with no karma loss to defend yourself. Also, no one else in Underworld becomes hostile to you.
Whether you tell Carol that Gob is a slave or not, she will still advise he not visit Underworld.
If both Gob and Greta are killed, Carol will become despondent and mope around in her shop.
Carol cannot be mezzed.

Carols are a type of song in Final Fantasy XI. Because they are high-level songs, they are available only to Bards. There are a total of eight Carols in the game, each one corresponding to one of the eight elements: Earth, Wind, Water, Fire, Ice, Thunder, Light, and Dark. Despite their high level, Carols offer relatively similar protection versus each of these elemental forces as White Magic Barstonra, Baraero, Barwatera, Barfira, Barblizzara, or Barthundra. Their considerable advantage is probably their ability to guard against Light and Dark elements and that they actually stack with Bar-type spells to provide even greater defense. Even considering that, their use is relatively limited to only certain circumstances.

Carole Littleton is Claire's mother, Lindsey's sister, Christian Shephard's former lover and Aaron's grandmother. (It is uncertain whether the spelling of her first name is "Carole" or "Carol". The closed captions in "Par Avion" spell the name "Carole" but other sources, such as the onscreen credits of "There's No Place Like Home, Part 1" and the ABC MediaNet press release for "Whatever Happened, Happened", spell the name "Carol".)

Very little is known about Carole. Claire said she was a librarian. About 23 years prior to the events of "Par Avion", Carole had an affair with Christian Shephard. It is unknown how long it lasted, but Carole became pregnant with their daughter, Claire. Christian supported her and the baby, came down to visit several times, and he even paid for her house's mortgage. However, neither Carole nor her sister Lindsey approved of Christian dividing his time between families, and they made him promise never to come back.
Carole decided to tell Claire that her father was killed when Claire was two, and she proceeded to raise Claire by herself, working as a librarian. Unfortunately, Claire became angry and reclusive, adopting a Goth-like lifestyle. Claire later commented that she was "horrible" to Carole. ("Par Avion")
Carole and her daughter were driving down a freeway when they had a ferocious argument. Claire shouted that she hated Carole, and that she wished she was dead. She was speeding when she hit a truck and was forced off the road. Carole, who was not wearing her seat belt, was thrown through the windshield and she landed hard on the pavement. Though the doctors were able to save her life, she was left in a coma. Christian immediately flew down to see her, and he paid for all of her hospital expenses. He introduced himself formally to Claire as her father, and he suggested, reluctantly, that she be taken off life support, since there was no hope of her recovering or ever leading a normal life again. ("Par Avion")
Claire decided that she could not go through with it, and Carole was kept alive for many years. (That statement is repeated on numerous sites despite Claire's observation to Thomas in "Raised by Another" in 2004 that "(her) mum would disown (her)" to which he replies "she basically has already".) She was still in the coma when Claire became pregnant and Claire visited her regularly, watching nature programs with her mother. While Carole was in a coma, Claire tearfully apologized to her mother for putting her in her current condition, and told her about the adoption of her then-unborn grandson. ("Par Avion")
Carole somehow recovered from her coma sometime after the crash. After the rescue of the Oceanic Six, she attended the funeral of Christian Shephard. She then spoke to Jack after the funeral, revealing to him that she had an affair with Christian, and that their daughter, Claire, was Jack's half-sister and was on the plane with Jack. As Jack tries to maintain his calm, she apologizes and leaves. On her way out, she notices Kate holding Aaron, and notes that the baby is beautiful, ironically not realizing that she is commenting on her own grandson. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1")
Sometime after the return of the Oceanic Six, Carole Littleton sued Oceanic Airlines. In 2007 she settled with them and traveled to Los Angeles to pick up her check, which was delivered by Dan Norton. Having followed Norton to Carole's hotel room, Jack confronted her, believing her to be Norton's mystery client seeking custody of Aaron. At this point she revealed that she did not even know Aaron existed, much less his status as her grandson. ("The Little Prince")
Before going back to the Island, Kate went to see Carole with Aaron. Carole was confused as to why Kate saw her, and mentioned her visit with Jack. Kate tearfully confessed that Aaron was really her grandson, that her daughter survived the crash, and declared that she was going back to save Claire. Carole took the news well, and Kate took her in to see a sleeping Aaron. Aaron remained with his grandmother while Kate left to go see Jack. ("Whatever Happened, Happened")
