A butter is a type of processed material that is usually created by grinding or churning a raw material until it separates into one or more usable consistencies. Most often, butters are created by processes that release fats and oils, or liquids, from a raw material, changing the consistency completely.

In the Human vernacular, the term butter by itself usually refers to the creamy food ingredient created by churning the milk of an animal.

About Butter

Wikipedia Article About Butter on Wikipedia

Butter is a dairy product made by churning fresh or fermented cream or milk. In many parts of the world, butter is an everyday food. Butter is used as a spread, as a condiment and in cooking applications such as baking, sauce making, and frying. Butter consists of butterfat surrounding minuscule droplets consisting mostly of water and milk proteins. The most common form of butter is made from cows' milk, but butter can also be made from the milk of other mammals, including sheep, goats, buffalo, and yaks. Salt, flavorings, or preservatives are sometimes added to butter. Rendering butter produces clarified butter or ghee, which is almost entirely butterfat.

A firm solid when refrigerated, butter softens to a spreadable consistency at room temperature and melts to a thin liquid consistency at 32–35 °C (90–95 °F). The color of butter is generally a pale yellow, but can vary from deep yellow to nearly white. The color of the butter depends on the animal's feed and is sometimes manipulated with food colorings, most commonly annatto or carotene.

A detailed view of a pat of butter

A Pat of butter is a food ingredient made with the cooking skill. Players can make one by churning a bucket of milk, which gives 40 cooking experience, or a pot of cream, which gives 22.5 cooking experience, in a dairy churn.

A pat of butter is used by adding it to a baked potato to make a potato with butter. After adding the butter, players can then add additional topping(s). (See this list of potato toppings for information.)

How to obtain butter

Purchasing Butter

Pats of butter can also be bought from the Culinaromancer's chest after starting the Recipe for Disaster quest. On 10 March 2009, Jagex increased the price of butter in the Culinaromancer's chest from 4 gp to equal that of the current mid-price on the Grand exchange. On 13 March 2009 this was 485 gp. This has since been reverted, with butter now costing 5 gp again, making it a very efficient money-making process to buy at the chest and sell on the Grand Exchange. There is however, a limited stock of 10 of this item in the chest.

Churning Butter

An efficient way of churning butter is by using pots of cream to churn the cream into butter. This saves inventory spaces, time and trips to the bank by not having buckets, from milk, using up inventory space. On the other hand, using milk with a full inventory will auto-drop the buckets, making it a much cheaper way of making butter while using the same amount of spaces.

Another method of churning butter (much slower, only suitable for players training construction)

If your house is in Yanille (requires level 50 construction), simply run to the house portal from the bank, and use the dairy churn between the house and the bank, and return to the bank. Approximate round trip time for 28 pats of butter is 8 minutes, 6 minutes of which is spent churning. With 40.5 cooking experience per pat of butter, you get 1,134 total experience for a full load.

A quick method for obtaining butter (in Yanille)

Another option is that does not require buckets to be pre-purchased:

  • Go to the Zanaris bank, either have with you some money, or withdraw it from the bank.
  • Go south to the general store and buy 14 buckets. This way you will be able to retain them when you are done churning.
  • Go past the field east to the dairy cow and milk it.
  • Then go north-west to churn it into butter
  • Bank and repeat
