One of the three variations of the Breath attack in Final Fantasy VIII.

Breath is a recurring enemy ability in the series. It is a set of abilities, namely those with "Breath" in the name, that deals various effects, such as elemental damage or statuses, to one or all party members (usually being all party members). Some common Breath attacks are Big Breath, Dark Breath, and Zombie Breath.

Final Fantasy III

Breath inflicts Paralyze to one character.

Final Fantasy IV

Bad Breath, originally called Breath, used by Malboro, Great Malboro, and Lunasaur, inflicts various statuses to one character. Dark Breath is the special attack of the Dark Dragon, which inflicts moderate non-elemental damage to the party.

Final Fantasy V

Poison Breath inflicts major non-elemental damage as well as the Poison status to the party. Zombie Breath, used by various dragons, inflicts Zombie as well as major non-elemental damage to the party.

Final Fantasy VI

Breath is an enemy ability, found only in the Advance version and used by Hexadragon, which inflicts Petrify. Humbaba Breath, used exclusively the second time by Humbaba, blows 2 characters out of the battle. Last Breath is the most powerful attack in the game, used by Kaiser Dragon, which deals 800% physical damage to the party.

Final Fantasy VII

List of Breath attacks:

  • Abnormal Breath inflicts Confusion on a single party member, and is used by Unknown 2 and Dragon Zombie.
  • Big Breath, used by Allemagne, inflicts moderate non-elemental damage to one party member.
  • Blue Dragon Breath inflicts moderate Ice elemental damage to the party, and is used by the Blue Dragon.
  • Cold Breath inflicts Ice elemental damage to one character
  • Dark Dragon Breath inflicts moderate non-elemental damage to the entire party.
  • Double Breath, used by Schizo, inflicts Fire and Ice elemental damage to the party, while Left Breath inflicts Ice elemental damage and Right Breath inflicts Fire elemental damage. Left Breath 2 and Right Breath 2 are the same as their normal counterparts, except they target the entire party.
  • Funny Breath, used only by Dorky Face, inflicts Confusion on the party.
  • Poison Breath inflicts Poison to the entire party.
  • Red Dragon Breath inflicts moderate Fire elemental damage to the party, and is used by Red Dragon
  • Rider Breath, normally used as a counter to magic attacks by Dragon Rider, inflicts moderate non-elemental damage to a target.
  • Shady Breath, used by Sample:H0512, inflicts Poison on the entire party
  • Viper Breath, used by Serpent, inflicts Ice and Water elemental damage to one party member.

Final Fantasy VIII

List of Breath attacks:

  • Breath is an enemy ability used by few enemies, which deals non-elemental damage to the party. When used by Grendel, it inflicts Lightning elemental damage as well. When used by Ruby Dragon, it will never be used if one or more party members are Ko'ed. When used by Hexadragon, it only targets one party member.
  • Breath of Death, used by Blood Soul, deals non-elemental damage to one party member.
  • Disease Breath, also used only by Blood Soul, inflicts non-elemental damage and Silence on a party member.
  • Ice Breath, used by Snow Lion, inflicts Ice elemental damage to the party.
  • Magma Breath, used solely by the Iguion, inflicts Fire elemental damage as well as Gradual Petrify to the party.
  • Storm Breath, used by Elnoyle and Elvoret, inflicts non-elemental damage to the party, and is used every 6th turn.

  • Breath, used by Adamantoise and Demonolith, inflicts major Fire elemental damage to the party, as well as Petrify (this only being with Demonolith's version)
  • Fire Breath is another Ronso Rage, which inflicts Fire elemental damage to all enemies.
  • Flame Breath, used by Lamashtu, Mushussu, Nidhogg, and Vouivre, inflicts moderate Fire elemental damage to the party.
  • Ice Breath, used by Fafnir, inflicts Ice elemental damage to the party.
  • Lightning Breath, used by Fafnir, inflicts Lightning elemental damage to the party.
  • Mana Breath is an extremely powerful, non-elemental attack that inflicts severe damage to one party member, and is used only by Sanctuary Keeper.

  • Putrid Breath, used only by Malboro Menace, inflicts almost all statuses in the game to the party.

  • Adamant Breath, used only by Adamantoise and Adamantortoise, inflicts Fire elemental damage to the party equal to 5/8 of their max HP.
  • Bated Breath, used by Azi Dahaka, inflicts major non-elemental damage as well as removing stat and positive bonuses from all party members.
  • Bloody Breath, the special attack of Tawrich, inflicts moderate non-elemental damage as well as Poison, Blind, Silence, and Confusion to a single party member.
  • Breath is the specialty attack of the Drake species. When used by Bolt Drake, it inflicts Lightning elemental damage to the party. When used by Spine Drake, it inflicts Ice elemental damage to the party. When used by Lesser Drake and Greater Drake, it inflicts Fire elemental damage to the party.
  • Breath of the Gorgon, the specialty attack of Oversouled Adamantoise and Adamantortoise, inflicts damage equal to 1/2 of remaining HP as well as Petrify to the party.
  • Flame Breath, used by Claret Dragon, Zalamander, and Flame Dragon, inflicts moderate to major Fire elemental damage to the party.
  • Really Bad Breath, used by Great Malboro, inflicts nearly all negative statuses to the party.
  • Stone Breath is a Blue Bullet, used by the Doomstone species, inflicts Petrify to the entire party.

Final Fantasy XI

Most breath attacks deal damage in a cone in front of the user, though some are single target. Notably, the strength of breath attacks is tied to the user's HP - the lower it gets, the weaker the breath attack.

  • Breath of Life, used by Mimic Queen, restores HP to the user.
  • Cloying Breath, used mostly by the enemies that use Bad Breath, inflicts only Sleep and Slow on all targets in range.
  • Ember Breath inflicts Fire elemental damage, and is used by Chimera Brain and Gorgimera.
  • Flame Breath, used by Rogue Tomato, inflicts Fire elemental damage to whoever is in range.
  • Poison Breath, used by Aeronite and Dheed, inflicts non-elemental damage and Poison to anyone in range.
  • Putrid Breath inflicts nearly all negative statuses in the game to anyone in range.
  • Stone Breath, used mainly by the Wyrm genus, inflicts non-elemental damage and Petrify.
  • White Breath, used by Behemoth King, Fafnir, and Yiazmat, inflicts Ice elemental damage and Stop.

  • There are two Firebreaths: a ranged attack that deal moderate fire damage over a large area, and that is used by Fire Drakes, and a flying attack that deal light fire damage and is used by the Wyvern.
  • Frostbreath, used by Ice Drakes, deals moderate Water damage over a large area.
  • Petrobreath, used by Earth Drakes, deals moderate Earth damage over a large area.
  • Plasmabreath, used by Thunder Drakes, deals moderate Lightning damage over a large area.

Final Fantasy Tactics

List of Breath attacks:

  • Breath Fire, used by the Minotaur, is a Fire-elemental attack that deals damage to one character.
  • Fire Breath, used by Dragons, deals Fire-elemental damage, and is a slightly ranged attack, going two squares ahead.
  • Ice Breath, used by Dragons, deals Ice-elemental damage, is a slightly ranged attack, going two squares ahead.
  • Thunder Breath, used by Dragons, deals Lightning-elemental damage, is a slightly ranged attack, going two squares ahead.
  • Tri-Breath, used by Hydras, deals non-elemental damage to random squares three times, and has a range of two squares in four directions, and an effect three square around the target.
