Popular seaside resort in Lancashire, famous for its Illuminations, tower, and trams. The Illuminations are a 'light show' that attracts visitors from around the country. The switching-on ceremony that marks the start of its sixty-day run is a major event in the North West with celebrities invited to perform the switching on. Honoured Coronation Street actors include Violet Carson and Julie Goodyear.
Due to its popularity as a day trip venue amongst Northern mill towns and its proximity to the fictional Weatherfield, Blackpool has often featured in Coronation Street plots.
In the early 1960s Harry Hewitt proposed to Concepta Riley whilst on a visit, and on another Ena Sharples was accidentally left behind to make her own way home when the coach left without her.
Rita Sullivan has twice run away from Weatherfield to live in the town, once working in a laundrette and the second when fleeing from Alan Bradley. Bradley met his death in the town, crushed beneath the wheels of one of the famous trams.
More recently Tyrone Dobbs proposed to his girlfriend Maria Sutherland whilst visiting.
Jack and Vera Duckworth were sent there for a 3-week holiday by scheming grandson Paul Clayton in autumn 2007, and planned to move there in early 2008, but they didn't because of the sudden death of Vera. Jack then decided to carry on as a lodger at 9 Coronation Street with Tyrone Dobbs and Molly Compton, although he is currently a regular visitor to Blackpool.
