Black Waltz No. 3 is a boss from Final Fantasy IX. It is first fought on the Cargo Ship when the party is on the way to Alexandria, just as Zidane implements his plan to steal the ship and go to Lindblum instead. He is by far the strongest of the three, but his magic is so powerful that it slowly drives him insane. When the regular Black Mages attempt to protect Vivi from him, he wipes them out in a massive Thundaga attack, causing Vivi to become confused as to his actions. Vivi's confusion becomes rage and a battle ensues. After being defeated, he refuses to accept the fact that he is not invincible, and commandeers Zorn and Thorn's small airship. He pursues the cargo ship that the party is on until he loses control of his craft and crashes into an airship gate. Later in the game, he attacks the train containing Garnet and Steiner. Garnet attempts to question Black Waltz as to her mother's intentions, but by now, it is totally insane and blindly attacks her, only to be destroyed.

The battle begins with Vivi going into Trance, with Zidane and Steiner providing backup. Despite the Waltz's use of high level magic (Thundara, Blizzara, Fira), the battle can be won by the time Vivi falls out of Trance.

After the battle he jumps away and lands on Thorn and Zorn's small aircraft and commandeers it to follow the escaping Cargo Ship. When it gets close it begins to charge another Thundaga spell, but Vivi blows it away with a Fire-based attack, being hurt by the back draft. It tries once more to attack but winds up blowing up his own engine with his Thundaga and crashing into the South Gate.

—Black Waltz No. 3

Later in the story, it returns to fight Princess Garnet, Steiner, and Marcus when their train stops just in time to miss it on the tracks. This time around, it is much more volatile and its attacks do more damage, but the player cannot lose this battle unless they command Steiner and Marcus to attack and knock out Garnet. This is because Black Waltz No. 3 will never attack Garnet, and if she is the only ally left standing the boss will inflict damage upon itself, eventually leading to its defeat. It is recommended that Marcus is kept alive, because Black Waltz 3 has some valuable items that Marcus can Steal. This final defeat of Black Waltz 3 ends the legacy of the Black Waltzes.
