History

Duc No Tranh was a boy growing up in a Vietnamese village during the Vietnam War. During the war, American soldiers, including Red Wolf, Willie Lincoln, and the future reverend Michael Janes, massacred his village and parents. He tried to climb aboard the Americans’ helicopter, but he was kicked off by Private Janes, despite the pleas of other soldiers on board.

Years later, the boy became the costumed Bengal and traveled to America for revenge on the soldiers involved in the destruction of his village. Willie Lincoln sought Daredevil’s protection, and the hero defeated Bengal.

Bengal later clashed with the New Warriors and the Punisher over the fate of Reverend Janes. He eventually befriended the New Warriors and Bengal and Janes made peace with each other.

Despite this, Bengal still felt the need to avenge atrocities stemming from the Vietnam War. He came to believe that Gai No Don, an acquaintance of Night Thrasher, was in reality, Li Pan, a Vietnamese general responsible for thousands of innocent deaths. Bengal battled security officers until he reached Gai. He was confronted by Night Thrasher and Silhouette, whom Gai had hired. He was told Gai was not Li Pan. Bengal leaped out a window and escaped. Bengal later attacked the Poison Memories gang, a long time New Warriors enemy. He believed they had information on Li Pan. Again, Night Thrasher fought him. He was temporarily subdued and urged to move on.

Bengal was hired by Tombstone, an albino American gangster. Along with the man's employees, he confronted a loose collection of superheroes operating out of New York City. Bengal personally confronted Shang-Chi; both acknowledged they had heard of each other in the past. Before the fight could begin, Black Widow subdued Bengal with a 'stinger' blast.

Several of Tombstone's allies were swallowed up by Cloak, one of the heroes, but it is not clear whether Bengal was. Victims of Cloak usually faced their worst fear before being dumped out, freezing and disoriented.

After his employment by Tombstone, Bengal married a woman named Tranh and improved his English.

Civil War/The Initiative

The Bengal was identified as one of the 142 registered superheroes who had registered and were being trained as part of the Initiative.[1][2] He was seen being bussed into Camp Hammond, the super-human training facility built on the remains of Stamford. One of the many other passengers on the bus was Rage, one of the surviving New Warriors. Other passengers included Thor Girl, Komodo, Slapstick and Cloud 9.

As part of his training, he battled the Thing alongside many others of his class. Little success was had.

World War Hulk

Bengal was part of the Initiative's black-ops team created by Henry Peter Gyrich. It was revealed that Peter Gyrich had recruited him for that specific reason recognizing his talents. Bengal was persistent at first; he refused to take orders from James Rhodes due to his involvement in the Vietnam War. In the end however, he did what was best for his family and in hopes that he could redeem himself. Soon after, the Hulk returned from deep space with an army and battled many of Earth's heroes. Some of the Camp Hammond recruits were captured and kept imprisoned in Madison Square Garden. He along with the Constrictor, Trauma, Mutant Zero, and three Scarlet Spiders freed the Hammond prisoners.
