"Get a message to the fleet! We have to warn—"
―O'Niner, to his rookie troops — (audio)Listen (file info)

This battle took place on the moon of Rishi around 22 BBY, during the Clone Wars. Confederate General Grievous had planned to attack the Wild Space planet of Kamino in order to end the Republic's production of clone troopers, but the Republic held Rishi Station, a listening post near Kamino on the moon of Rishi, to warn the Republic fleet of any impending Confederate attacks in the area. Grievous therefore decided to capture the post before attacking Kamino; he deployed BX-series droid commandos to the moon in boarding ships, and the inexperienced troopers in the base mistook the arriving droids for a meteor shower. The droids then attacked the clones, taking them by surprise and jamming the base's all-clear signal on so that they couldn't warn the Republic fleet. While the droids overran the base, troopers CT-26-1409, CT-27-5555, CT-26-6958—nicknamed "Echo," "Fives," and "Hevy" respectively—along with the trooper nicknamed "Cutup," fled the base through a ventilation shaft. Cutup, however, was soon killed by a Rishi eel.

Meanwhile, Commander CC-2224 and Captain CC-7567, nicknamed "Cody" and "Rex" respectively, arrived for a routine inspection of the base. They were ambushed by the droid commandos, but they escaped and soon found the three surviving clone troopers. The clones then tricked the droids into opening the main doors of the listening post and quickly retook the base. When the commando droids stopped reporting, Grievous sent a group of battle droids to investigate. Realizing they couldn't defeat all of the reinforcements, the clones planned to destroy the listening post with liquid tibanna. As they fled the base, however, the remote detonator wasn't responding, so Hevy stayed behind to fix the problem. The invading battle droids entered the command center of the listening post and soon opened fire on Hevy, injuring him. Hevy then manually detonated the explosive, instantly killing himself, destroying the droids and listening post, and cutting off the all-clear signal. The Republic fleet was then alerted to the danger and managed to intercept Grievous' fleet, forcing the Confederate ships to retreat. Later, Echo and Fives were both inducted into the 501st Legion, and Hevy was honored for his bravery and sacrifice.

Prelude

"Even though you're all new here, I shouldn't have to remind you that this quadrant is key to the Outer Rim."
―O'Niner, addressing the stationed rookie clone troopers at the Rishi station — (audio)Listen (file info)

Around 22 BBY,[2] during the Clone Wars, the Galactic Republic began utilizing listening posts in the Outer Rim Territories to watch for Confederate activity. Due to the high casualties suffered by the Grand Army of the Republic, new clone troopers were assigned to these stations without undergoing the customary intensive training most clones experienced before beginning duty. A number of these rookie clones, nicknamed "shinies"[1]—a derogatory term referring to the troopers' spotless armor that had not yet seen action in battle[3]—were assigned to Rishi Station, a crucial listening post located near Kamino on the moon of Rishi, under the command of Sergeant CT-19-7409, nicknamed "O'Niner."[1]

Grievous confers with Asajj Ventress

Seeking to end the production of the Republic's clone troopers, Confederate General Grievous planned to invade the Wild Space planet of Kamino with Dark Acolyte Asajj Ventress and a fleet of Munificent-class star frigates. However, Rishi Station played a key role in the protection of the area of space around Rishi and Kamino, and as long as the station was active, the Republic fleet would be warned of any Confederate activity in the area. As such, Grievous decided to capture the station before continuing with his plan to invade Kamino.[1]

Grievous deployed elite BX-series droid commandos in Droch-class boarding ships to the moon of Rishi to capture the base. Mistaking the incoming pods for meteors, the clone troopers inside the listening post raised the shields in case of meteor damage. After landing, the droid commandos emerged from their pods and stealthily made their way to the base, killing CT-327, a clone trooper deck officer who kept watch outside the station. When the clones in the base lost contact with CT-327, Sergeant O'Niner sent clone troopers Nub and Droidbait to search for him, but the two clones were quickly killed by the invading droids. O'Niner then left the command center of the base, ordering trooper CT-26-6958, nicknamed "Hevy," to sound the alarm to alert the Republic fleet. The rookie clone trooper found that their signal was being jammed, however, and O'Niner was soon killed by the battle droids.[1]

BX-series droid commandos kill O'Niner

After witnessing O'Niner's death, troopers Hevy, CT-26-1409, CT-27-5555—nicknamed "Echo" and "Fives" respectively—and the trooper nicknamed "Cutup," fled from the base through a ventilation shaft inside the command center. The leader of the commando droids contacted Grievous via hologram and informed him of their success. The cyborg general ordered the droids to leave the station's "all-clear" signal on, which, if turned off, would alert the nearby Republic fleet. This kept the Republic oblivious to the attack and unaware of the incoming Confederate fleet making its way toward Kamino.[1]

Retaking the station

"All right, listen up. There's only one target of interest in this sector: ”Kamino”. It's the closest thing we clones have to a home. Today we fight for more than the Republic. Today we fight for all our brothers back home, understood?"
"Sir, yes, sir!"
―Rex to Echo, Fives, and Hevy — (audio)Listen (file info)

Rishi Station, however, was due for a routine inspection. The droids, fearing that they might be discovered and the alarm sounded, donned clone helmets and tried to dissuade the Republic from sending an inspection team, but they were unsuccessful. Clone Commander CC-2224 and Captain CC-7567, nicknamed "Cody" and "Rex" respectively, were sent to inspect the base, despite the protests of the droids. Meanwhile, Hevy, Echo, Cutup, and Fives had emerged from the ventilation shaft onto the surface of the Rishi moon. They came under attack from a Rishi eel, which killed Cutup, before the eel departed.[1]

Rex and Cody are attacked by the droid commnados

Upon their arrival at the moon, Cody and Rex were surprised to find no sign of the deck officer or any of the other clone troopers. When they attempted to contact the troopers within the base, the droid commandos—disguised as clones—pretended there was a communications malfunction. Upon reaching the main doors of the base, a droid commando dressed in clone armor tried once more to dissuade the inspection team from entering. Rex, however, shot the droid and removed it’s helmet to reveal that it wasn't a clone.

The droid commandos, however, had taken up positions on the landing pad, and after Rex destroyed the droid commando outside the main door, the hidden droids ambushed the two clones and caught them in a crossfire. The droids then destroyed the clone officers' Nu-class attack shuttle,[1] the Obex,[3] in which the two clones had traveled to the moon, but Rex and Cody escaped under cover of the explosion. The clones traveled from the landing pad down to the moon's surface, where they found the three remaining troopers. Fearing them to be more disguised droids at first, Rex and Cody ordered the other troopers to remove their helmets. Having proven that they were clones, Hevy, Echo, and Fives teamed up with Cody and Rex, the latter of whom began to refer to the rookie clone troopers as "shinies." Soon, however, the eel that had killed Cutup reappeared and attacked the clone troopers. With one shot to the eye, Rex quickly dispatched the eel before it caused more casualties.[1]

Under the command of Rex and Cody, the five troopers agreed to attempt to retake the base from the droids. Using a droid’s head and claiming to have a faulty vocabulator, Rex convinced the droid commandos to open the main doors. The clones ambushed the three droid commandos inside the doors, quickly destroying them. They then stormed the base, defeating the remaining droids and retaking command of the listening post. Grievous, having lost contact with the droid commandos, dispatched a team of battle droid reinforcements to investigate the disappearance of the droids in the listening post. The clones, attempting to sound the alarm, found that the droid commandos had hardwired the all-clear message into the listening post.[1]

Destroying the station

"Hevy, get out of there."
"The remote isn't working; I have to detonate it manually."

The destruction of the listening post.

When the Confederate reinforcements arrived on the moon in a C-9979 landing craft, the clones decided to destroy the base with thermal detonators coupled with highly explosive liquid tibanna, so that the all-clear message would cut off and alert the Republic to the Confederate threat. The liquid tibanna, which was stored in plunk droids, were gathered by Rex and Echo, while Cody, Hevy, and Fives engaged the invading battle droids. After the three clones rejoined Rex and Echo, who set up the explosives so that they could be detonated with a remote, they retreated to the ventilation shaft through which they'd originally escaped. As the clones fled, Hevy attempted to activate the remote, but the device didn't work, so he decided to go back and manually detonate the explosives.[1]

When the other clones noticed Hevy’s absence, they began attempting to contact him via comlink. Hevy, however, refused to heed the commands from his superior officers to flee and join them, telling them that the remote wasn’t working and that he knew what he had to do. As Hevy reentered the command center of the base, he came under heavy fire from multiple droids and was shot, but not killed. Whilst the clones ran back to the base in an attempt to rescue Hevy, the droids deliberated on whether to take Hevy prisoner or whether to kill him. While they were preoccupied, Hevy manually set off the explosives, destroying the base and obliterating the droids and himself within it; and cutting off the all-clear signal.[1]

The Republic repels the Confederate invasion fleet.

As the all-clear signal was cut off from the listening post, the nearby Republic fleet—under the command of Admiral Wullf Yularen and Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker—was alerted to the danger. They cut off the incoming Confederate ships over the moon of Rishi, and Grievous, realizing that his fleet was outgunned, ordered a full scale retreat before the Republic could cause major damage to his ships.[1]

Aftermath

"Congratulations. You're not shinies anymore."
―Rex, to Echo and Fives — (audio)Listen (file info)

Shortly after the battle, a number of Low Altitude Assault Transport/infantry gunships were sent down from the Republic fleet to search for survivors of the explosion. On the moon’s surface, the ships found the four surviving clones and returned them to the fleet, where Echo and Fives received medals for their bravery. Rex then appointed the two rookies to the 501st Legion, and Hevy was also honored by the Republic.[1]

Behind the scenes

This battle first appeared in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series episode Rookies, the fifth episode of the series, which aired on Cartoon Network on October 24, 2008.[1] The Clone Wars Director Dave Filoni used the battle to show that, although commando droids were more useful than the simpler B1 battle droids, a large force of B1s were still a threat.[4]
