The Battle of Naboo in the Galactic Civil War took place shortly after news of Emperor Palpatine's death had reached the planet.[3]

Contents

Background

In his efforts to consolidate power and bring sovereign systems under Imperial control, Palpatine sent a garrison force to Naboo, under the pretense that it would be protecting the planet's precious plasma energy resources.[4]

Despite being connected with the Emperor, the planet's rulers had never been quite willing to cooperate fully with their Imperial supervisors, and quiet resistance against the local garrison had been brewing for many years. The Gungans, who had become marginalized during this period and had mostly returned to their swamplands, had also founded several resistance cells. Despite this, the Gungans and human resistance fighters worked mostly in secret, fearing they were not strong enough to resist the legions stationed on the world.[4]

As it became known that Palpatine had died along with Darth Vader aboard the second Death Star, and that the Rebel Alliance had been victorious against their fleet, countless planets exploited the confusion and disarray amongst Imperial forces to liberate themselves from their oppressive rule. The citizens of Naboo took the opportunity, as well.[3]

The battle

Despite previous diplomatic behavior, the Naboo and the Gungans banded together to once more oust an oppressive force from their world. Naboo rebels mobilized N-1 starfighters, while the Gungans contributed Militiagung soldiers to invade the capital.[3] The Theed Royal Palace was stormed and supporters of the Rebellion made their way through the palace, even up to the roof tops. The only known portion of the battle did not seem to have caused extensive damage to the exterior of the Palace, based on its appearance immediately afterward.[3]

Although initially successful in taking control, the Rebel-sympathizers were violently struck down by the local Imperial troops and the planet remained within the Imperial sphere of influence for some time afterward.[2]

Aftermath

Eventually, the planet became free of Imperial influence, and its sector was represented in the New Republic Senate by a Gungan Senator.[5]

"Wesa free!"
—Unknown Gungun

The Battle of Naboo, also known as the Liberation of Naboo, was a major battle fought between the Alliance of Free Planets and the Galactic Empire in late 4 ABY. The battle resulted in the end of Imperial control over the Naboo system and proved to be in important step for the Alliance of Free Planets in acheiving their ultimate goal of forming a New Republic. The Battle began as an uprising against the Empire by members of the Royal Naboo Security Force and their Gungun allies. Eventually the Alliance of Free planets arrived to aid the rebels, who were finally able to oust the Imperial garrison from their planet once and for all.

Backround: The Sykes-Chamberlyn Plot

"This is our last chance. This is our last chance to show the Galaxy that we weren't all like him."
Colonel Gavyn Sykes after learning of Emperor Palpatine's death at Endor

By early 4 ABY, the Galactic Empire was stretched thin across the Galaxy as it tried in vain to put down the growing Rebellion. As a result, the Imperial garrison on Naboo was greatly reduced in size. Royal Naboo Security Force Colonels Sykes and Chamberlyn, both strong rebel sympathizers, saw this as an opportunity to rid Naboo of the Empire once and for all. Both Sykes and Chamberlyn knew that rebelling against the Empire whilst Moff Panaka still controlled the Royal Naboo Security Forces would be impossible. Feeling that Panaka had sold himself to the Empire and that he would never whillingly give up his power, Sykes and Chamberlyn reluctantly determined that, in order to free Naboo, they would have to assassinate Panaka. Once he was dead, they intended to take control of the RNSF as duumvirate and mobilize against the small Imperial garrison on the planet. Meanwhile, they would remove Queen Kylantha from power and declare Naboo's independence from the Empire. They had intended to alert the Rebel Alliance to their situation, giving the Alliance time to arrive and secure the planet before the Empire could retaliate. By the time of the Battle of Endor, the group of conspirators had grown to include Captain Kyrie Stavi, commander of the Space Fighter Corps' Bravo Squadron, Captain Teric Kallen, comander of the Theed contingent of the RNSF, as well as the members of the Royal Advisory Council.

When word reached Naboo of Palpatine's death at Endor, the conspirators decided it was time to act. Chamberlyn deliverd a datapad rigged with explosives to Panaka's office, and, after witnessing the explosion in Panaka's office, moved to the Theed Royal Palace, prepared to arrest Kylantha as Sykes prepared to assault the Imperial garrison. The plot fell apart when it was learned that Panaka had survived the explosion. Sykes arrived at the Theed Hangar only to find it swarming with stormtroopers with TIE fighters circling outside which Panaka had mobilized after the explosion. As word of Panaka's survival spread, many Security Force Officers, confused and unsure of where to place their loyalties, simply laid down their weapons and let events unfold as stormtroopers swept through the city, rounding up any who resisted. Sykes, Chamberlyn, Stavi and the few other RNSF Officers which remained loyal to them barely escaped the city with their lives. Over the following weeks, dozens of RNSF Officers as well as the entire Royal Advisory Council, despite Queen Kylantha's protests, were executed on Panaka's orders for their part in the conspiracy. The Empire, realizing how close it had come to losing Naboo, sent thousands of additional stormtroopers to the planet.

Sykes, Chamberlyn and the other surviving conspirators escaped to Otoh Gunga where they joined forces with the Gunguns, who had chafed under Imperial rule. After some convincing by Sykes and Chamberlyn, the Gungan High Council agreed to aid the rebel Naboo in their attempt to free the Planet from Imperial control and began mustering the Grand Army.

The Battle

The Insurgency

As soon as the Army was ready, the Gunguns, under the command of Bombad General Roos Tarpals, launched a guerrilla war against the Imperials on the planet.
