"Anyone with half a brain should have seen the flaw in the reasoning that, if we hadn't been attacked yet, we were unlikely to be attacked at all."
Captain Arien Yage

The Battle of Bastion was fought between the forces of the Imperial Remnant under Grand Admiral Gilad Pellaeon, and those of the Yuuzhan Vong under B'shith Vorrik.

The Battle

Vorrik's forces unexpectedly arrived in the Bastion system, easily destroying planetary defense systems and catching the Imperial Starfleet off guard, as they were expecting the force to attack the Hand of Thrawn at Nirauan. Only Pellaeon's own Star Destroyer, the Chimaera, responded with appropriate efficiency. Despite this, the Starfleet was able to hold its own at first, until the Yuuzhan Vong pulled back to make way for swarms of thousands of grutchins. The fleet responded to the grutchins with appalling disorganization, and the resulting losses forced Pellaeon to order the evacuation of Bastion.

In the midsts of the battle, the Jade Shadow, carrying a small Jedi expedition including Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker, arrived. After assessing the situation, they joined the fight against the Yuuzhan Vong near the gas giant that the Chimaera and the Imperial Star Destroyer Superior were orbiting, and provided Pellaeon with information on the location of a yammosk in the opposing forces before departing.

Pellaeon's force then attempted to break out of the mass shadow of the gas giant. The Superior was critically damaged, and Pellaeon ordered its evacuation as it fell into the depths of the planet. The Chimaera had also taken considerable damage by the time a coralskipper rammed its bridge, nearly killing Pellaeon. A junior officer pulled the Grand Admiral from the bridge and took him to a medical frigate carrying survivors from Superior. Under the cover of wreckage from Superior, and the brave sacrifices made by a dozen TIE/ln starfighter pilots, the frigate was able to leave for Yaga Minor.

Aftermath

Upon arrival in the Yaga system, the pilot of the shuttle that ferried Pellaeon to the planet, a Human male named Vitor Reige, stayed with the Grand Admiral even during the latter's life-saving surgery aboard the Imperial frigate Widowmaker. The surgery was performed by the Chadra-Fan Jedi healer Tekli. One of the results of the battle was the Remnant choosing to ally with the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances against Yuuzhan Vong.
