A player fighting Verac the Defiled

Barrows equipment is an occasional reward to players who play the Barrows minigame. There are six sets of Barrows equipment, each from a different barrows brother: four for warriors, one for rangers, and one for mages.

Each set of equipment has four pieces: a two-handed weapon and armour for the head, body, and legs. When a player wears a complete barrows set, there is a chance its set effect will activate during combat, giving the player some benefit. Each set has different effects, which are detailed below. Each set requires players to have a specific minimum combat level in order to wield and wear it.

Barrows equipment decays when used, as detailed below. The equipment is tradeable, but only either in its fully-repaired state (with no status number after its name) or in its fully-degraded state (with a 0 after its name). Barrows sets cannot be made using the Smithing skill.

Each piece of Barrows equipment degrades when it is used. After 15 hours of combat, an item becomes fully degraded, at which point it is unusable (cannot be worn or wielded) until it is repaired it. The equipment only degrades during combat and can be worn indefinitely without degrading as long as a player does not enter combat. A fully-repaired item has no number after its name, while a degraded piece will have a number after its name:

  • 100: Item is 100%-76% repaired.
  • 75: Item is 75%-51% repaired.
  • 50: Item is 50%-26% repaired.
  • 25: Item is 25%-1% repaired.
  • 0: Item is fully degraded (0% repaired).

A fully-repaired item immediately degrades to its 100 level when used for the first time in combat. Any item of Barrow equipment that is dropped to the ground immediately goes to its 0 state. This includes items dropped in a Gravestone when a player dies. The repair costs of the equipment makes it potentially expensive to use in situations where players are likely to die frequently.

Once an item is at all degraded, it can be repaired, at a cost in coins. Players do not have wait until the item is fully degraded to repair it. Indeed, players are recommended to repair the item before it reaches 0. (Since the items only degrade in combat and cannot be used when they reach 0, players risk losing the benefit of weapon or armour in combat at this time.)

A degraded item can be repaired by the NPCs Bob in Lumbridge or a Squire at the Void Knights' Outpost. Upon being repaired, the item becomes fully restored and loses the status number after its name. To repair fully-degraded items, the NPCs charge 100,000 coins for a weapon, 90,000 for body armour, 80,000 for leg armour, and 60,000 for head armour, totalling 330,000 for a full set. When less-degraded items are repaired, the repair charges are proportionally reduced. For example, an item exactly 50% degraded will cost half the fully-degraded cost to repair. However, although only the numbers 100, 75, 50, 25, and 0 are shown for the items, the game internally tracks the exact percentage the item had degraded and repair costs are based on that number. For example, an item marked with 50 could actually be only 26% intact and thus would cost 74% of its full repair cost, not 50%.

Players can save money on repairs by repairing Barrows equipment themselves, using an Armour stand in a Player-owned house. Players can use any armour stand in anyone's house and can find one at almost all times of day by going to World 31, the House party world. The cost of repairing an item at an armour stand is always at least a bit less than using Bob or a squire, but the exact cost depends upon the player's current Smithing level (smithing boosts count for this). The cost can be calculated by subtracting the player's current smithing level from 200, then dividing the result by 200, then multiplying the final number by the normal cost. A player with smithing level 1 will pay about 99% of the regular cost, level 50 75%, and level 99 50.5%. Players with level 99 smithing and using smithing boost can repair Barrows armour for less than half the NPC cost. The Assist System cannot be used. Upon using a piece of armour on an Armour stand, players will be told how much it will cost and will be asked if they wish to proceed.

The price is exactly 50% when operating a player's Smithing cape.

After completing the Recipe for Disaster quests, players can also buy well-armoured gloves that are the same colour as Barrows armour. (These are sometimes called "Barrows gloves" by players.) These gloves are widely considered to be the best gloves available for any form of combat, due to their substantial defence and attack bonuses. The gloves do not need repair.

WARNING: If you drop any Barrows item, it will automatically fully degrade to 0. Players choosing the 'drop' option on any Barrows item will receive a warning message and an option to confirm or cancel that they wish to drop it.

Dharok the Wretched (Melee)

A female player equipped in a full Dharok set.

Dharok the Wretched's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Attack and Strength to wield the weapon.

Many players using Dharok's intentionally lower their hitpoints to take advantage of the set effect, colloquially referred to as "Dharoking". Common methods of lowering hitpoints are:

Dharoks is occasionally used for PKing as well as duelling as it has exceptional defence bonuses, and a deadly set effect.

Wretched Strength: Attacks do more damage as the wearer's hitpoints decrease. The wearer's strength will be doubled when his/her health is under 10%. It is well known that under the correct circumstances, the attacks can deal over 100 damage with this set.

Torag the Corrupted (Melee)

A player equipped in a full Torag set.

Torag the Corrupted's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Attack and 70 Strength to wield the weapon.

Full Torag carries the highest overall defence bonuses of the Barrows sets, although the same defence bonuses can be achieved by mixing and matching pieces from other sets. Torag's set is not commonly used by players because of the set effect granted which is criticized as being second-rate to the set effects of the other 3 melee armours. Torag's armour is normally used for ranged-tanking, particularly the helm and platelegs which provide good stab, slash, crush and ranged defence bonuses whilst only slightly diminishing ranged accuracy.

Corruption: Successful melee attacks have a chance of lowering the victim's run energy by 20%.

Guthan the Infested (Melee)

A player wearing a full set of Guthan's armour.
Guthan's special effect, Infestation.

Guthan the Infested's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Attack to wield the weapon.

Infestation: Successful attacks have a chance of replenishing the player's health by the damage caused, on a 1:1 ratio.

Despite the usefulness of Guthan's set, it is strongly recommended to avoid using it on some monsters. Some creatures have dangerous special effects that Guthan's does not guard against. For example, Basilisks are deadly against players without Mirror shields, but players cannot equip a shield when using Guthan's warspear. A Dragons fire breath attack is deadly when wearing full Guthan's for similar reasons (although an Antifire potion or anti fire-breath potion can partially protect a player). Players thus should consider checking about a creature's special ability (if any) before trying to use Guthan's against it. Full Guthan's is popular in the TzHaar Fight Caves Minigame as it will save food. It is also popular with high level players for most training because no food is needed.

Guthans set is also commonly used by Tanks in the Bandos Dungeon of God Wars

There are several strategies for players to obtain the set benefits while avoiding using the set excessively:

  • Use good armour and weapons that do not need to be repaired, switching to the set when health runs low.
  • Wear the armour to get its defence bonuses but use any other weapon/offhand item combination for regular damage. Switch to Guthan's warspear when health runs low. This is efficient because Guthan's warspear is slow and does not deal damage as effectively as other weapons.
  • For Slayer assignments, follow the above plan but instead of Guthan's helmet wear a Black mask or Slayer helmet for its slayer bonus. Switch to Guthan's helmet and warspear when health runs low.
  • For creatures in which Guthan's set is not appropriate (like turoths), see if there are other nearby creatures with which the set is appropriate. Use the best armour and weapon against the target creatures. When health gets low, switch to the set and attack the other creatures.

One common mistake for players using one of these switching strategies is to miss switching into one item of Guthan's during the heat of combat. This means the set will not activate, and a player can get into serious trouble if the problem is not detected and fixed.

Guthan's set is less than ideal against creatures that make magic or magic-based-melee attacks. Guthan's has quite poor magic defence, so the player will be hit frequently by these creatures. Guthan's set can activate against these creatures, so if the creature isn't too powerful for the player the set can be used to heal. However, a money-saving strategy like those above can be used. Wear armour with high magic defence and switch to Guthan's as necessary.

Players new to Guthan's set should use it carefully until they are experienced with how it works. The set is not guaranteed to activate with any successful hit. While it perhaps activates about every fourth or fifth hit on average, it sometimes will go much longer periods without activating. Also, even if a player typically hits in the 20s, the set might activate on a 1 or 2 hit, thus healing very little. If the creature being fought can deal a lot of damage consistently, a player occasionally can get into trouble quickly.

The set effect from Guthan’s armour will no longer heal you if you fail to do any damage, for whatever reason, to the creature you are fighting, for example if you are fighting mutated terrorbirds or tortoises without having first weakened them with a crystal chime.

When using wearing full Guthan's and activating the Deflect curses, there is a chance to heal what damage you deflect.

Verac the Defiled (Melee)

A player wearing full Verac set

Verac the Defiled's set requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Attack to wield the weapon. Verac's set (mainly the brassard) possesses slightly lower defence bonuses compared to the other Barrows melee armour, in exchange for prayer bonuses and lower weight.

Defiler: Attacks have a chance of ignoring any armour and prayers, causing potential heavy damage, which makes it very useful and very famous by people in the pvp worlds when fighting in the Duel Arena, Fight Pits, killing the Kalphite Queen, and killing Tormented Demons.

Karil the Tainted (Ranged)

A player wearing full Karil set

Karil the Tainted's set requires 70 Defence and 70 Ranged to wear the armour and 70 Ranged to wield the weapon. Karil's has the highest Magic defence of all the Barrows equipment, which applies to the combat triangle. For this reason, Karil's set is often used against enemies that use magic or magic-based melee, even when meleeing.

Tainted Shot: Successful ranged attacks have a chance of lowering the enemy's Agility level. Many players in the past have requested a different set effect. A lot of players were annoyed when they found out that this armour provides worse defensive stats (except for magic) than full black dragon hide with a blessed coif, especially because Karil's armour is more expensive.

Ahrim the Blighted (Magic)

A player equipped in a full Ahrim set

Ahrim the Blighted's set requires 70 Defence and 70 Magic to wear the armour and 70 Attack and 70 Magic to wield the weapon. Ahrim's armour is quite popular to use in PvP situations, due to the high magic and defence bonuses it gives, but most players tend to avoid using it as the cost is relatively high and it would be difficult to replace numerous times. Many people ignore the staff as it is 2 handed, and the full set effect isn't considered to be very helpful. However, recently, due to the 2 September updates, the staff now does about 10% more damage when performing spells, and this weapon's price seems to be going up.

Blighted Aura: Successful magic attacks have a chance of lowering the enemy's strength by 10%

Trivia

  • Due to a bug, Guthan's skirt was once slightly transparent, similar to the transparency of ghostly robes.
  • For a week or so after the Graphics Update, the Dharok's greataxe was held 2-handed.Players complained about this, so Jagex changed it back to the way it was originally held; with the axe carried with one hand leaning on the shoulder. The same thing happened with the Obsidian Maul, another 2-handed weapon.
  • It is possible to drop Barrows' Equipment without it being damaged, it only needs to be noted or kept as a Grand Exchange set.
  • During the Barrows mini-game, if a player receives a barrows item from the chest, but has no inventory space, it will appear on the ground as undamaged.
  • For a short period after the armour's introduction (a few weeks maximum), the armour was non-degradable. Due to complaints from many people about the highly over-powering factor of the items, Jagex altered the sets to its current degradable state.
  • These items are currently clan merched very often. It is suggested to buy after a drop due to the clans simply raising the set by merching another item in it.
  • When wearing a Verac's plateskirt with any crossbow, there's a glitch where the plateskirt can stretch up when attacking.
  • It is possible to spawn multiple brothers while in the tunnel, if you continue to go through a door repeatedly. While a brother is already spawned, though it is not advised as both will attack you once combat is intitiated.
