A Barb-tail harpoon is a one-handed wieldable harpoon obtained by hunting Barb-tailed Kebbits. As well as being a weapon, it can also be used for fishing. Many players prefer this harpoon over a normal one if a bank is far away as it does not occupy an inventory slot, allowing an extra fish to be caught. It also requires no Attack level to wield. However, it requires 35 fishing to use.
If you are hunting barbed tailed kebbits and do not wish to bank, you should just drop the harpoons as they don't cost much, but if you wish to bank, the closest bank is in Mobilising Armies.
When using the Barb-tail harpoon while fishing, you will catch, or attempt to catch fish 12.5% faster than if you were to use a regular harpoon. For example, the time it takes to complete 8 "stabs" (or animation cycles) into the water with a regular harpoon is the same amount of time it takes to complete 9 "stabs" (or animation cycles) with a barb-tail harpoon. This is a very small advantage over a regular harpoon, but definitely one to consider when fishing for higher-level catches (such as shark), which take significantly longer than lower-level catches. (such as tuna) The extra 1-out-of-9 you get can add up to large amounts after several hours, days, or weeks of training.
