Obtaining

Main article: The Velvet Curtain

The Backwater Rifle is found on a shelf behind you at the end of The Velvet Curtain quest along with other weapons and ammo in the room.

Bugs

  • The Backwater Rifle has been known to turn invisible for a limited time. (Confirmed Xbox 360.)
  • Attacks made from the Backwater Rifle may hit the target, causing the hit body parts to be crippled, but dealing no actual damage.

Appearances

Backwater Rifle appears in the Fallout 3 add-on Point Lookout.

Behind the scenes

  • The name of this rifle is probably a reference to a backwater part of the country. That is, an isolated and backward place, and given the amount of inbred humans one faces in Point Lookout, it can be reasonably said that Point Lookout is a backwater region. In addition, Point Lookout is somewhat of a swampland.
  • This weapon could also be a reference to a rifle that has been "backwatered" which means that if there is a liquid source in the barrel of a rifle, the gunpowder would mix in with the water, resulting in the cartridge being unable to fire and rendering the weapon temporarily useless.
