Baal (Ba'al) was a god for the ancient Phoenician people on Earth. Often associated with Human and child sacrifice, in the 21st century, this belief came into question by scholars and archaeologists. The new theory presented was that the Baalists were the victims of an ancient slander campaign.

In 2267, Spock used Baalist child sacrifice as an example of the Federation's lack of religious freedom. (TOS novel: Mission to Horatius)

History

Baal may or may not be the god worshiped by the Canaanites. This demon was brought to Earth by the warlock Aleister Creel using a series of ritualistic killings that were investigated by the Batman. Etrigan the Demon helped Batman defeat and seemingly destroy him, but Ahriman contacted him in trying to seduce Superman into evil. One of their confederates, Izanami, the Japanese death-goddess, even turned Lois Lane into a god to sway Superman, but the Man of Steel could not be tainted and he defeated them both, turning over Baal, Ahriman, Izanagi and their cohorts back to their perspective pantheons.
