History

Azrael's history is a mystery to everyone, including himself. What little known about his past involves Azrael crashing an alien spaceship atop Mount Michelson in Alaska at some point in time. The ship remained buried under ice and snow until a team from S.T.A.R. Labs unearthed it. They used technology pioneered by Elinore Stone, Victor Stone's mother, to awaken Azrael.

Azrael's awakening had an averse affect on those around him however. As he regained consciousness, his body temperature spiked so high that he actually caused the cryogenic chamber he was in to explode. Emerging from the machine, Azrael encountered the young empath Lilith Clay. Immediately, a psychic bond was forged between the two and Azrael believed that he was in love with her. [1]

Azrael broke free of the S.T.A.R. Labs facility and flew off into the skies above Manhattan. Alone and bereft of memory, he perceived Lilith's allies, the Teen Titans as adversaries and strove to get away from them. Despite the heroes' talents and experience, they were unable to apprehend Azrael, whose adept flying capabilities out-maneuvered them at every turn. [2]

Powers and Abilities

Powers

Alien Physiology: Although humanoid in appearance (apart from his wings), Azrael's physiology is radically different from a normal human being.

Flight: Azrael is capable of directional flight by way of naturally grown wings.

Hyper-Reflexes: Azrael's agility and reflex time are greater than the average human being. He has demonstrated the ability to easily evade capture while flying through congested city streets.

Notes

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985-86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
  • Information obtained from Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe II.
  • It is possible that Azrael's home world might be somewhere in the Vega star system. Starfire likened him to one of the alien species she encountered in her travels through Vega.
  • Azrael grew extremely agitated when he was bound by Donna Troy's Golden Lasso, suggesting that he may have been a prisoner or a slave at some point in his past. [3]

Trivia

  • The visual conception of Azrael is based more on the designs of José Luis García-López than that of George Pérez's work. Outside of an unpublished sketch, Pérez was not involved with the development of the character. [4]
