Rasi Tuum (Jedi Master)

"I wandered for a while, doing whatever odd jobs I could get and eventually found out being a bounty hunter was what I did best."
―Azlyn Rae

Azlyn Rae was a female Human who was originally a Jedi Padawan of the New Jedi Order, only to become an Imperial Knight following the Sith-Imperial War. By 137 ABY, she had also developed a cover as a bounty hunter, hiding her identity by wearing armor and a mask, while wielding an orange lightsaber, thus concealing her Imperial Knight status.

Early life

"Gave me up for dead, didn't you, Cade?"
"Long time ago... Azlyn Rae."
―Azlyn Rae and Cade Skywalker

Sometime before 130 ABY, Azlyn Rae was the Padawan of Jedi Master Rasi Tuum. She was a close friend of fellow Padawan Cade Skywalker, having had many adventures together on Ossus, and even sharing a kiss at one point. Rae would later in life admit that she had always loved Skywalker, and had always hoped they could be together.

After the Battle of Coruscant and the Massacre at Ossus she was separated from her Master and, like many Jedi, she was believed dead. Wandering the galaxy in disguise, Rae became a member of the Bounty Hunters' Guild. However, after an Imperial Knight rescued her, she felt that she owed them and allowed the Imperial Knights to complete her training.

Following Cade Skywalker

"I know Azlyn. I'm confident her first loyalty is to the Fel Empire and our Emperor."

Cade Skywalker confronts Rae.

In 137 ABY, when Rae heard of a man named Cade escaping the Temple of the Sith, she thought that he might have been the boy she once trained with. She then followed Skywalker from the Golden Gorg Cantina in Socorro to Rawk's Nest in Iego to find out if this "Cade" was the same person she knew. When he was high on a death stick, Rae took the opportunity to knock him out, possibly to collect his bounty. After a minor confrontation with "Bantha" Rawk—who was in fact former Jedi Master Nat Skywalker—she revealed herself to Skywalker and Rawk.

When a Sith Imperial Pellaeon-class Star Destroyer under the command of Captain Gurlok appeared, looking for Skywalker's whereabouts, Rae prevented the death of Rawk's stepchildren by using a mind trick on Gurlok when he refused to believe that he was lied to by Black Sun.

Afterwards, Rawk informed Skywalker of the existence of a Jedi Hidden Temple. Rae went along, though she informed Antares Draco, Ganner Krieg and Princess Marasiah Fel of the existence of the temple and Skywalker's plan to travel there.

Rae accompanied Skywalker and "Bantha" Rawk, along with Deliah Blue and Jariah Syn, to the Hidden Temple on the planet Taivas, leading the Imperial Knights with her. As they landed on the temple everyone but Rae was surprised to encounter the Imperial delegation led by Marasiah Fel. Despite the animosity between the Jedi from the Temple and the Imperial Knights, they were able to put aside their differences and talk without violence—the Imperial Knights said they were in a peace mission, the Jedi wondered how they got to their hidden location. Skywalker did not waste much time figuring it was Rae who betrayed them, but Fel told him Rae was an undercover Imperial Knight, and not just looking for credits by selling them out. Her mission was to find Skywalker and convince him to return to Bastion, but his travels to the Hidden Temple change all that.[2]

While Skywalker met with the Jedi Council, Rae was reunited with Rasi Tuum.[2] Tuum questioned her choice to join the Imperial Knights, and Rae admitted that she was doubting if she should remain one. When Fel became aware of this, she told Rae that the penalty for leaving the Imperial Knights was death.

Traveling with Skywalker

Assassination mission

"Cade, I see a way in! Can you hold off the raks by yourself?"
"Do it! Quick! I'm tired of these stoopa raks!"
―Azlyn Rae and Cade Skywalker, during the Battle of Had Abbadon
Rae faces the Sith alongside Shado Vao, Ganner Krieg and Antares Draco on Had Abaddon.

When Skywalker left on a mission to assassinate Darth Krayt, Rae, along with Draco and Krieg, went with him. While en route to the planet Had Abbadon Skywalker's ship, the Mynock, was pulled out of hyperspace by the interdictor field on a Pellaeon-class Star Destroyer, the Iron Sun, and tractored into the hangar bay. Rakghouls were discovered on the vessel and Rae was infected by the Rakghoul Plague. While infected Celeste Morne revealed to Rae and Skywalker the nature of the Rakghoul Plague and her history. Fortunately Skywalker was able to cure Rae using his healing power. This display of the Force convinced Morne to assist in Skywalker's plot to assassinate Krayt, and joined Skywalker's entourage.

The strike force eventually reached Had Abbadon in the Deep Core. After attacking the Imperial base there, the party successfully took it. Celeste allowed the Devaronian Sith Lord, Darth Reave, to escape so Krayt would know Skywalker was there and coming after him. While waiting for Krayt to arrive, Draco contacted Emperor Roan Fel about the Muur Talisman. During this time, Krieg met with Rae. After a short discussion about their last meeting, Rae admitted that she knew he had feelings for her, but as Imperial Knights they would always be forced down different paths. At that moment, Draco found them and told them about the Emperor's new orders: Fel was interested in the talisman, and ordered Draco and the other Knights to bring him either Celeste Morne or just the talisman after the mission to kill Krayt was over.

Rae and Ganner were horrified by this order. After making it clear that she would not participate in this mission, Rae went to kill Morne and, if necessary, take the talisman for herself, to prevent her from causing any further harm. But as she entered the room just outside Morne's, she was stopped by Skywalker. After a brief argument, Rae and Skywalker fought in a lightsaber duel, but Skywalker was able to calm her down. At that moment, they realized their old feelings for each other had resurfaced, and shared a kiss. They spent the night together, but their time together was interrupted by the voice of Karness Muur, who was messing with the minds of the team.

Rae manages to land a critical strike on Darth Krayt during the Battle of Had Abbadon.

Krayt took the bait, and traveled to Had Abbadon with Darth Maladi, his Hands Darth Talon and Darth Stryfe, and Darth Wyyrlok. Once there, the team attacked the Sith Lords. Rae, Draco and Krieg were cut off from the rest of the battle due to Morne's rakghouls. During this time, Draco said he was going to secure the talisman. Rae objected, and Draco physically assaulted her. Krieg interceded, however, and Draco left them to complete his mission.

After fighting through the rakghouls, Rae witnessed the battle between Darth Krayt and Celeste Morne. Sensing an opening, Rae launched herself at Krayt and succeeded in impaling her blade through his right shoulder. The shock of the surprise attack momentarily distracted Krayt giving Morne an opening. Morne, under Karness Muur's influence, unleashed a massive torrent of dark side lightning, catching both Krayt and Rae in the attack. The attack left Rae unconscious, her skin blistered with severe burns and most of her hair singed away.

Skywalker attempted to heal Rae with his ability but the damage was too extensive even for his powers to heal her. Desperate to save her, Skywalker and his crew decided to take Rae with them to find help from Bantha Rawk. Krieg tried to prevent them from taking her, saying that as an Imperial Knight, she belonged with her own kind. Shado Vao, however, Force-pushed him and Draco away, saying that Rae had been a Jedi before she joined them. Skywalker and his crew then rushed Rae off planet.

"Let me go, Cade. Let the Force... take me. I'm not afraid."
―Azlyn Rae to Cade Skywalker
Rae "thanks" Cade Skywalker for her new armor.

Rae awoke on the Mynock with Skywalker using his healing powers on her to keep her alive. After finding out Krayt was dead, she told Skywalker that she was not afraid to die, and asked him to let her go. A distraught Skywalker refused, saying he could not lose her again.

After reaching Kiffex, Skywalker put Rae in a healing pod under the care of his aunt and uncle, Droo and Bantha Rawk. Bantha tried to convince Skywalker to let Rae die; however, Skywalker made Bantha swear an oath to do whatever was necessary to save her. Despite Bantha and Droo's best attempts, Rae continued to resist their attempts to heal her. Bound to the oath he had made, Bantha resorted to one final desperate plan: placing Rae inside a prototype life preserving suit, originally created to save the lives of mortally wounded Kiffu Guardians. The suit, as noted by Bantha and Droo, bore a disturbing similarity to Darth Vader's armor, having a bacta pumping system and an artificial breathing system.

After awakening within the confines of the armor, Rae confronted Skywalker for refusing to let her become one with the Force and causing her to be sealed inside the armor for the rest of her life. After a short battle, the two were separated and Skywalker was told to leave Kiffex in two days. Some time later, Ganner Krieg arrived to take Rae back to Bastion.

Back on Bastion Hogrum Chalk found Rawk's design crude and designed a new suit of life-supporting armor for Azlyn - one that resembled the traditional armor of the Imperial Knight and had the artificial breathing system installed in the neck area of the armor, thus saving Azlyn from the need to wear a helmet and mask. Within this armor, Azlyn began testing her current abilities in sparring matches with Krieg.
