Australia, as seen from space

Australia was an island continent on Earth. Located in the southern hemisphere, it was the location of an eponymous nation-state.

Australia was home to a prehistoric human culture, commonly called Aborigines. They had a complex philosophical system which included a concept called Dream-time. This culture was nearly wiped out in the late 20th century, but had managed to survive into the 23rd century. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)

European visitation

In the late 18th century, a penal colony was established on Australia by the United Kingdom. English Captain Arthur Phillip attempted to establish a penal colony at Botany Bay on January 17, 1788 - but poor soil conditions at the site led to it being established first at Port Jackson, then moved to Sydney Cove. Despite the move the penal colony was still identified as Botany Bay. In the 20th century, Khan Noonien Singh memorialized the colony by naming the sleeper ship his augment group had been provided with after the colony. (TOS novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 2)

United Earth

By the 22nd century. the nation was known as the Independent Republic of Australia. It was the last of the old nation states on Earth to join the United Earth government. (ENT novel: The Good That Men Do) In 2370, Doctor Beverly Crusher mentioned Australia as a continued hypothetical hold-out against the formation of the United Earth government in 2150. (TNG episode: "Attached")

Modern times

Earth Starfleet conducted survival training in the Outback of Australia. (ENT episodes: "Desert Crossing", "First Flight")

The two humpback whales brought by James T. Kirk to the 23rd century, George and Gracie, were given a new home at the New Cetacean Institute off Australia's Great Barrier Reef. (TOS novel: Probe)

From Muppet Wiki

Uncle Traveling Matt in Australia

Australia is a commonwealth nation, formerly a British penal colony in its earliest years, which also occupies an entire continent, the smallest of the world's seven. Native animals include such uniquely indigenous creatures as the kangaroo and the koala.

  • The Australian counterpart to the cable station Nick Jr. has broadcast various Muppet series, including Open Sesame (a compilation of US Sesame Street segments) and Play Along With Ollie, featuring a new specifically Australian Muppet, Ollie.
  • Big Bag featured a recurring segment, "Samuel and Nina," produced by Australian animator Yoram Gross (and redubbed in New York City).
  • Farscape was filmed in Australia, and with the exceptions of Ben Browder and Kent McCord, the cast was composed of Australian and New Zealand-based actors.
  • Uncle Traveling Matt appeared on location in Australia in various episodes of Fraggle Rock. In "I Don't Care", Matt learns of a stick you throw away (the boomerang). In "New Trash Heap in Town", he observes a herd of kangaroos, coming to the conclusion that they serve as transportation systems. During the filming of these segments, Dave Goelz discovered local puppeteer Ron Mueck (born in Melbourne), who served as assistant puppeteer and later joined the Workshop in London. [1]
  • In episode 210 of The Muppet Show, Gonzo recalls the time he worked with a kangaroo who could tell time, but was always wrong because his watch was on Australian time. The kangaroo had never actually been to Australia, however, having come from Sidney the Agent.
  • Bambaloo is filmed and aired in Australia. The show first aired on the Seven Network, and has also aired on ABC.

From Grand Theft Wiki

The Australian flag.

Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere, a neighbour to New Zealand.

The country's OFLC provides the age classification of all media in the country, including Grand Theft Auto releases. The majority of the GTA series is rated MA15+, however some editions of the games have drawn the RC rating ("Refused Classification"). Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was famously re-rated after the Hot Coffee debacle, the OFLC changing its original MA15+ rating to RC. The re-release of San Andreas saw it obtain the the MA15+ rating again, after the Hot Coffee material was edited out. Rockstar produced a different version of GTA IV for retail in the Australian/New Zealand market to meet Australian OFLC MA15+ guidelines -- no blood pools form beneath dead bodies, prostitute 'services' are shown from an obscuring angle (and no options are available), and injury decals are not shown on the protagonist or on NPCs when they are wounded. Copies of the game acquired from online retailers (Steam, Gamestop etc) are the international version of the game, even if downloaded within Australia. The international version of GTA IV was eventually submitted for rating in New Zealand by a retailer, and was passed with an 18+ rating, allowing the uncensored version to be sold there.

Media that receive a "Refused Classification" rating are banned from sale; it is particularly easy for games to receive this rating, as there is no 18+ classification for games. Games which do receive this rating must be edited to meet MA15+ standards to obtain an Australian release.

Note that the OFLC do not decide ratings policy, but merely enforce it -- changes to the classification system, such as providing an 18+ rating for games, must be authorised with a unanimous vote from all state attorneys-general. Attorney General Michael Atkinson of South Australia is the lone dissenting vote regarding an 18+ category for video games.

Australia within the Grand Theft Auto games

Within the GTA III era games, references are made to a war between the United States and Australia, usually in Ammu-Nation commercials and radio shows. It can be presumed that Australia lost the war -- San Andreas Ammu-Nation promotions mention weapons "from when we whooped Australia's ass", and a commercial for the 'Babies' adoption service in GTA IV mentions " Australian baby, which loves to play war but always loses."

On the website "" in GTA IV there is also another reference to Australia losing the war.

There is more information available on this subject at Commonwealth of Australia on the English-language Wikipedia.

The Commonwealth of Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere of Earth comprising the mainland of the world's smallest continent: "Oceania", the major island of Tasmania and a number of islands in the Southern, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The neighbouring countries are Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and the French dependency of New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the south-east. Its capital is Canberra, and its largest city is Sydney. It is currently the location of the HIGHCOM Security Committee Headquarters.

The Location of Australia on Earth.

The Australian mainland has been inhabited for more than 42,000 years by Indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the north and by European explorers and merchants starting in the 17th century, the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation as part of the colony of New South Wales on 26 January 1788. As the population grew and new areas were explored, another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established during the 19th century.

On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth Realm. The capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory. The population is 21 million, and is concentrated in the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide Darwin and Hobart in Tasmania.

During the Human-Covenant War, Australia, or at least one of its cities, suffered extensive damage.[1]

United Nations Space Command

The UNSC has many bases and facilities in Australia, namely, HIGHCOM Facility Bravo-6, where the members of the UNSC Security Committee gather, and the Sydney Synthetic Intellect Institute in Sydney, as well as the ONI Ordnance Testing Facility B5D at Swanbourne, Perth.

Australia is an Oceanian nation of the southern hemisphere, on the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It has a population of over 21,000,000 and its capital is Canberra.

The beginnings

As is often the case with warm nations who experience little to no snowy winters, ice hockey remains a niche sport in Australia, where it is practiced and enjoyed by a small number of enthusiasts. Nevertheless, ice hockey enjoys a long and rich tradition in Australia.

The history of ice hockey in Australia begins as far back in time as 1904, when a group of enthusiasts decided to adapt field hockey so it can be played on ice in Adelaide, then Australia's lone city with an ice rink. Three of the participants later moved to Melbourne and introduced the game there. Melbournian youth enjoyed the game and in 1907, they challenged American soldiers who had docked with their warship Baltimore near the end of the season. The locals challenged the Americans for a game, which the visitors gladly accepted. That match turned out to be the first organized ice hockey game in Australia - a first game with an international flavour. The Americans won the match in front of a capacity crowd. Much attention was given to the event in the press that day and the game became a regular activity at the Melbourne rink.

A first hockey club was formed the following year, 1908. Then, 1909 proved to be a very developmental year for hockey in Australia. A new rink opened in Victoria and four new clubs came to existance in the territory: the Glaciarium, the Beavers, the Brighton and the Melburnians. The latter two had restricted membership, as they were only open respectively to members of the Brighton field hockey club and to the members of the Old Boys of Melbourne Grammar. Field hockey sticks have also been replaced by real hockey sticks imported from Canada, and the tennis ball used was re4placed by real canadian pucks. This marked the need for new rules to be adopted, based on English bandy and on Canadian ice hockey. The resulting product was rather violent and despite the lack of modern protective equipment, the players still took the ice and player the game, with very little intervention from the umpires (as the referees were called, as they are in cricket) except on the most violent hits.

1909 also marked the first Interstate Tournament in Australia, as the states of Victoria and New South Wales faced up. The latter team was the most inexperienced, but they still mananged to win the first game 1-0 on August 31st 1909. Victoria however bounced back to win the other two games 1-0 and 6-1. Victoria successfully defended its title the next year.

In 1911 came a revolution called Jimmy Kendall. A Canadian, Kendall settled in Sydney and brought to New South Wales hockey a wind of change. Kendall possessed skills, speed and accuracy well above that of the average Australian players, which didn't fail to cause consternation among the Victorian players and selectors.

World War I and beyond

It took longer for ice hockey than other sports to resume after World War I. Some rinks, like that in Sydney, had closed and took several years to reopen. When the Sydney rink reopened in 1920, hockey activities in Melbourne quickened too. But the war had left the sport in a sorry state: records and equipments had disappeared, players had drifted away and there was not even a single copy of the rules left. Basically, all what had been done had to be restarted from scratch.

Interstate activities resumed in 1921. The few pre-war players still alive and able were drafted into a team. This team included one of the most important figures of Australian hockey, Ted Molony and John Goodall, inactive since 1913, who was the donator in 1909 of the Goodall Cup. Jimmy Kendall was still there as well, and his coaching proved important in making New south Wales win the 1921 tournament.

Australia is a nation-state on the planet Earth's Southern Hemisphere. The world's largest island, the majority of it seems to consist of semi-arid or desert regions known as the Outback. The majority of the fauna and flora is unique to the country, and all of it deadly to humans, most notably the infamous and murderous dropbears.

In some continuities at least, the Australian accent is supposedly very similar to that of the inhabitants of the planet Nebulon, or vice-versa.
