An archaeology and anthropology officer, abbreviated as A and A officer, was a type of science officer assigned to Federation starships in the 23rd century, specifically an officer studying the fields of archaeology and anthropology.

In 2265, Lieutenant Ming Xiong served as the A and A officer on the Vanguard space station. Xiong felt that the appellation "archaeology and anthropology officer" was a misnomer, and that the proper name should have been "X and A", or "xenology and anthropology officer." (VGD novel: Harbinger)

In the mid-2260s, Lieutenant Carolyn Palamas was the A and A officer aboard the USS Enterprise. (TOS episode: "Who Mourns for Adonais?"; TOS novel: Prime Directive)

Lieutenant Theresa Errgang served as an A and A officer circa 2268, and participated in the covert cultural observation of the natives of Sigma Niobe II. (TOS short story: "As Others See Us")

By 2277, Lieutenant Ed Leslie was serving as the Enterprise's A & A officer. (TOS short story: "Under Twin Moons")

The archaeology and anthropology officer (or A & A officer) specializes in studying cultures (anthropology) and their pasts (archaeology).

Some Starfleet ships have an A & A officer on staff. In the 23rd century, Carolyn Palams served in this position aboard the USS Enterprise. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?"). In the 24th century, Dr. Ramsey was the USS Yamato's A & A officer, while, aboard the USS Enterprise-D, Marla Aster served in the archaeology department at the time of her death. (TNG: "Contagion", "The Bonding")

During the 2360s, first officer Anne Cobry was A & A officer aboard the USS Prospect. When she was promoted to the rank of captain and had an increase in duties aboard the USS Prospect-A, Cobry relinquished the role to Lieutenant Amy Bell in 2371. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles) Incidentally, Bell was the former A & A officer aboard the USS Minnesota (NCC-64332). (Star Trek: Minnesota: "Dirge")

Ensign Tyler Sinclair served as A & A officer aboard the USS Westphalen after his graduation from Starfleet Academy in the mid-2380s. (Star Trek: Pendragon: "The Argonaut Syndrome", "The Kraken", "Land of My Sojourn", "The Significance of a Single Day", "Another Time, Another Place", "Starkindler", "Still Called Today", "The Hand of God")
