The Ansata were a terrorist faction from the planet Rutia IV, hoping to gain independence from the primary Rutian government. They gained renewed vigor in the 2360s from the use of a folded-space transport device known as an inverter, despite its lethal side-effects.
In 2352, the Ansata assassinated a team of Federation diplomats, including Elix Barus. Until that point, Caera Shean was a member of the sect, and had been having an affair with Barus, which ultimately resulted in the birth of their son, Ciaran. (Star Trek: A Call to Duty)
In the year 2366, Ansata leader Kyril Finn kidnapped Starfleet officers Beverly Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard in an effort to gain Federation attention. (TNG: "The High Ground")
The Ansata were from the Ansata system located in the Core Worlds.[1] They had particular symbols indicating devotion to knowledge and learning. Jocasta Nu, a Jedi Master and Archives Director for the Jedi Order, wore robes with traditional Ansata patterns, indicating her personal devotion to these qualities.[2] Atris was known to wear similar symbols on her robes.[3]
The Ansata were first mentioned in Attack of the Clones: The Visual Dictionary, published in 2002. They later received mentions in The Official Star Wars Fact File 41 and the Star Wars Databank, and The Essential Atlas created the Ansata system. Within these sources, it is unclear whether the Ansata are a culture or species; consequently, this article treats them as a generic organization.
