"A terrible fiend that has awakened from slumber beneath the desert sands. Bent on destroying all it encounters, it is a fiendish fiend indeed."
Scan

Angra Mainyu is an optional boss in Final Fantasy X-2. He can be found wandering the desert as a random encounter during digs in the Bikanel Desert. It is only in Chapter 5 of the game that he attacks the diggers' camp. Only then must the Gullwings fight him. In order for this to happen, they must first find the ten Cactuar Gatekeepers.

Story

Angra Mainyu was a fiend that the Cactuars of Catuar Nation sealed away long ago, but was released after the Al Bhed began their excavations. It can be encountered by the player before Chapter 5, flying around randomly during digs in the desert. When the 10 cactuar Gatekeepers are found, they are able to ward away Angra Mainyu from their home, but then Angra Mainyu attacks the Al Bhed excavation site instead, which prompts the friendly neighborhood Gullwings to stop the menace.

Strategy

Angra Mainyu is the last boss of the Bikanel episode, and is one of the most difficult bosses of the game with 333,444 HP and 9,999 MP. Angra Mainyu uses the devastating Perdition's Flame attack, which deals non-elemental physical damage. It is accompanied by Tawrich, which is immune to magical attacks and uses physical attacks and the status-inducing Bloody Breath, and Zarich, which is immune to physical attacks and uses magical attacks as well as Glimmer of Despair which lowers stats and deals MP damage.

The best strategy is to have two Dark Knights casting Darkness, as it is neither a physical or magical attack, and have an Alchemist using a Mega-Potion from her Stash command. Because of his high HP and dangerous attacks, it will take at least an hour to defeat him normally.

Although it is a difficult opponent to overcome normally, the Angra Mainyu can be defeated in under one minute with an HP-critical gunner with the Cat Nip accessory using Trigger Happy. Defeating it gets you the Ribbon.

Etymology

Angra Mainyu is an alias of Ahriman. His name means "evil mentality". Zarich and Tawrich are the Daevas of aging and hunger.
