Peri Brown and Erimem would end up separated from the Doctor after landing in the Civil War, and witnessed its brutality first-hand. (TN: Blood and Hope)
The latter half of the 19th century, particularly the years following the Civil War, saw rapid colonization and development of the western half of the United States. Violence became a way of life in many settlements where often a lone marshall was hired to keep law and order. The Doctor and his companions once found themselves engaged in a particularly infamous and bloody incident known as the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (DW: The Gunfighters).

U.S. popular culture had a significant influence on the rest of the Earth during the 20th and 21st centuries, especially in the Western world. U.S. music was heard all over the world, and included such forms as blues, jazz and rock and roll. As late as the final destruction of Earth during the expansion of its Sun, much of this music was still considered among the greatest ever composed by humanity. (DW: The End of the World)
American DJs were well liked by the DJ of Tranquil Repose, who based his style of presentation on them. Peri Brown thought of "Tranquil Repose" as the sort of name for a place in America; the Doctor agreed but thought America of not having a monopoly on bad taste. (DW: Revelation of the Daleks)
New York City was destroyed during the 22nd century Dalek invasion (DW: The Chase), while Los Angeles was still a major global centre in the early years of the Earth Empire. (DW: Frontier in Space)
Despite the franchise's popularity in the US, since 1963 only a handful of TV episodes have featured scenes set within the US, and to date there have only been five TV stories set in their entirety in that country: The Gunfighters (the only story of the classic 1963-89 series set entirely in the US), the 1996 TV movie, Dalek, the two-parter Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks, and the 2009 animated serial Dreamland.
In the mid-1980s, plans were made to film part of The Two Doctors in the US, possibly in the vicinity of New Orleans. This plan was cancelled and the serial was filmed in Spain, instead. To date no Doctor Who story has undertaken major filming within the United States (the 1996 telefilm, though set in San Francisco, was filmed in Canada); some second-unit filming occurred for Daleks in Manhattan, however, but nothing involving the main cast.
The United States of America was a political entity on the North American continent on Earth. Established in 1776 by declaration of thirteen states, it eventually grew, by 2271, to include 56 states. (TOS novel: A Flag Full of Stars)
During the American Revolution, the Articles of Confederation was established as the governing document of the United States. Following the war, the weaknesses of a government structured on the Articles became apparent, and the Constitution of the United States of America was approved in 1787. The Constitution quickly became one of the most important documents in human history. Later governments - such as the United Federation of Planets - based their governing documents on the United States Constitution. (TOS episode: "Court Martial"; TNG episode: "The Drumhead").
In the mid 19th century, 11 southern states broke away from the Union for several years, and formed the Confederate States of America over disagreements over states rights. From 1861 to 1865 the two nations engaged in a conflict which would come to be known as the American Civil War. The war ended in a northern victory, and the former Confederate states all eventually rejoined the Union. The war was a key event in the ending of slavery and oppression on Earth.
As a subdivision of United Earth, and later of the United Federation of Planets, the United States remained a distinct political entity into the 24th century. Many famous Federation citizens have been born in the United States, from Jonathan Archer to Benjamin Sisko to Kathryn Janeway to James T. Kirk. Many of the principles that the United States government was built upon were later expanded to serve as the symbols and principles of United Earth and the Federation; the Statue of Liberty in New York City, for instance, came to be seen as a symbol of Federation patriotism by the 23rd Century. The American city of San Francisco is the seat of Starfleet Headquarters and the capital city of United Earth; it recieves the most shuttle traffic in the entire Sol Sector.
The President of the United States of America was one of the officials who toured San Francisco in the aftermath of the Breen attack during the Dominion War in 2375. (short story: "Eleven Hours Out," "Safe Harbors")

The United States of America is a country in North America. It is bordered on the north by Canada and to the south by Mexico. It is comprised of 50 states, one federal district, and several territories. The United States of America is also referred to, with varying formality, as the United States, America, the US, the USA, the US of A, or the States. Since the twentieth century the United States has emerged as the dominant global influence in economic, political, military, cultural technology, entertainment, music, movies, and television. The country celebrates its founding date as July 4, 1776.
America is the birthplace of both Jim Henson and the Muppets, and has been the home of the Muppets for over 50 years (excluding the brief period when the Jim Henson Company, and thus the Muppets, were owned by a German media conglomerate, EM.TV).
Over the years, the Muppets have reenacted many moments in American History; including Sesame Street's The American Revolution and Muppets Tonight's Great Moments in Elvis History. Miss Piggy has often been cast in the role of the Statue of Liberty, a symbol that represents a welcome to immigrants and a refuge from oppression.
The character of Sam the American Eagle is an outspoken American patriot. Fozzie Bear sings the patriotic song "America" in The Muppet Movie as the Muppets travel across the country. (As he explains, "Patriotism swells in the heart of the American Bear.") The finale of Muppet*Vision 3D is titled, according to Sam, "A Salute to All the Nations of the World, but Mostly America". This production number ends when the Swedish Chef blasts a hole in the theater with a cannon.

The United States of America was a pre-War federal republic and one of the last surviving economies in the wake of the mid-twenty-first century global energy crisis.

Prior to the Great War in 2077, the United States of the Fallout universe had an intermediate level of government between the fifty states and the federal government. The nation was divided into thirteen commonwealths sometime after World War II ended in 1945 but before the Virgo II mission landed Americans on the Moon in July 1969. The United States flag was changed as well to reflect the new political reality. Accordingly, the new flag depicted fourteen stars - thirteen in a circle to represent the commonwealths and one in the middle to represent the federal government and the nation as a whole.

It was hoped that the new administrative division of the country would help create legislation broad enough to benefit those states with common regional concerns, but narrow enough to not affect those states with dissimilar interests or political cultures, which would help the nation better meet the challenges posed by the Communist threat to American democracy. In reality, it created even more political strife in the American government, as commonwealths typically did everything they could to promote their own interests at the expense of other commonwealths. The thirteen American commonwealths were the:

It is unknown whether there were any changes to this system of commonwealths after the annexation of Canada in 2076. It is possible that Canada was under military rule until annexation was finalized (2076). Because of the relatively small size of its population, Canada was equal in size to a single, large American commonwealth. Border changes were also possible, e.g. concerning Alaska and the pipelines.
The pre-War federal government of the United States was not too different from that of twentieth century America in our own universe, albeit with certain differences. Agencies of the federal government mentioned in the games include two concerned with military affairs: the War Department and the Department of Defense, which may have actually been the same agency or, if they were separate entities, were both responsible for overseeing the development of various military research projects, from HERMES to the West Tek T-51b Power Armor.
Other federal agencies mentioned in the games are the Department of Energy (or Water and Power), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Unamerican Activities Force, Secret Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Drugs, Tobacco, Firearms and Lasers and the United States Space Administration. The legislative branch of the federal government was still composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate, though whether they still represented the individual states or now represented the different American commonwealths in some form is unknown.
Before the Great War, the United States Armed Forces were the overall unified military forces of the United States, composed of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force. The President of the United States served as the commander-in-chief of the American military, with the Department of War (sometimes called the Department of Defense) acting as the principal organ by which military policy was carried out.
After the Great War, the Enclave Armed Forces are the direct descendant of the American military. The Brotherhood of Steel, on the other hand, was started by former U.S. Army soldiers who rebelled against their unethical orders to protect scientists carrying out involuntary mutational experiments on military prisoners.
Members of the Enclave both embraced the idea of a nuclear war and knew that the common man could not survive it. They believed that as long as the "important people" of the United States survived, they could regroup quickly and wipe out Communism once and for all. Though not technically part of the Enclave, many powerful corporations benefited from the Enclave’s actions, and their research facilities were protected during the nuclear firestorm of 2077.
In 2073, as the global race to exploit the handful of remaining fossil-fuel resources reached its fevered peak, the United States managed to stake a claim on the world's last known supply of crude oil, buried thousands of feet beneath the Pacific Ocean. Poseidon Energy, a major American energy company, was contracted to build an oil rig and extract the oil. Before long, the oil ran dry and the oil rig was abandoned by Poseidon.
In 2077, with total nuclear war imminent, the President of the United States and a number of other American government officials left their posts in Washington, DC to take refuge in a number of secret locations around the world. Among them was the Poseidon Oil Rig off the coast of California. Here, the president himself set up a secret base from which the United States could continue to exist and wage war on China, with the eventual goal of retaking the continental United States from its post-atomic state. From 2077 on, the remnant of the American government surviving on this oil rig started to openly call itself the Enclave.
The Enclave mostly continued the pre-War American government, making alterations to fit their smaller size and increase the fluidity of operations. Some new departments that were established after the Great War included the Atomic Energy Commission and the Chemical Corps.
Ever since the end of World War II in 1945, the United States in the Fallout universe had sought to become the sole remaining superpower in the world, aiming to control the globe's major energy resources and influence the direction of life in other nations. In the twenty-first century this trend became even more apparent, because, as the Resource Wars raged between the European Commonwealth and the oil-rich states of the Middle East, and as the United Nations disbanded in acrimony, the United States found itself with no real rival on the global scene...except the People's Republic of China, which had become the second largest economy in the world.
However, the energy crisis of the mid-twenty-first century hit the United States harder than expected, coupled with the outbreak of the New Plague in 2053. In 2054 a nuclear exchange in the Middle East prompted the American government to establish Project Safehouse, which was intended to create 122 underground shelters that would save a select portion of American society from the ravages of nuclear war or an unstoppable global pandemic. Five years later, in 2059, in order to protect its Alaskan oil interests, the United States established the Anchorage Front Line, to defend its stockpiles of oil from potential invaders.
In 2060, as stockpiles of oil ran dry and the last underground reservoirs of petroleum emptied, the American economy ground to a halt. People stopped traveling by car and the political pressure to research alternative sources of energy increased enormously. To maintain its status as a superpower in spite of the crisis, the United States expanded the size of its military and commissioned a government defense contractor, West Tek to create powered infantry armor, which was intended to replace tanks on the battlefield. This project eventually proved to be the salvation of American industry, and, in the summer of 2066, the first crude nuclear fusion cell was developed as part of this research effort and was then adopted to civilian needs.
This fact, coupled with American unwillingness to share the world's last untapped oil field in the Pacific Ocean with other energy-starved nations, prompted China to declare open war against the United States and invade Alaska in 2066, initiating the Sino-American War. The initial Chinese campaign was successful, but soon, Chinese and American soldiers found themselves bogged down in a war of attrition, with both sides unable to gain any sort of meaningful advantage over the other. Even the mighty American T-45d Power Armor units did not tip the scales, as China's Crimson Dragoon units rampaged behind American lines, disrupting the U.S. Army's logistics and transport.
The United States' northern neighbor, Canada, proved unwilling to accept the increasingly aggressive behavior of the United States as it fought to repel the Chinese invasion. Faced with almost open hostility and the threat of military action, Ottawa relented, allowing American troops and aircraft to pass freely through its territory. This led directly to the annexation of Canada by the United States in 2076.
War and the energy crisis took a toll on American citizens. Together with the development of the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) being leaked to the mainstream news, 400 million citizens became increasingly restless as the global and national situation deteriorated, throwing the country into turmoil. The U.S. Army was deployed into major American urban centers to contain riots in the year just before the Great War, leading to the American Army firing on its own citizens in certain circumstances.
All these events became meaningless in 2077, as the atomic holocaust wiped the slate clean, engulfing the world in flames and destroying human civilization.
However, as fate would have it, humanity survived the atomic catastrophe. Even the American federal government managed to survive and became the Enclave, the only known remnant of the pre-War government.
Surviving American citizens, particularly in what had once been the state of California, soon started rebuilding and eventually established the New California Republic.
In Fallout 3, though the Enclave exists, there is no effective surviving American government. There is no evidence that places such as Megaton or Rivet City owe allegiance to any higher governmental body. However, here and there, characters make mention of states, commonwealths, and America:
The United States of the Fallout timeline, at least since the formation of the thirteen American commonwealths in the mid-twentieth century, seems to use the highly obscure Cowpens Flag, an American Revolutionary War-era flag used in the Battle of Cowpens, South Carolina in 1781 that resulted in one of the major victories of the young nation over its British mother country.
The only difference between the flags is a much enlarged middle star used on the American flag in the Fallout universe, probably to represent the nation as a whole.
The United States appears in all the Fallout games.
The initial idea of dividing the country into thirteen zones came from Leonard Boyarsky during the development of Fallout. In Fallout Bible 8 Tim Cain reported that Leon said he used that flag because it looked cool and he didn't want to use a standard U.S. flag with 50 stars. Eventually he planned to make up something about 13 super-states or something, but he never did. It was further elaborated upon by J.E. Sawyer, who broke up the U.S. into Commonwealths.
There is much misunderstanding about the number of stars on the flag and the corresponding zones, because not all of them are actually visible in the only available picture depicting it. Chris Avellone stated that there are 13 of them in Fallout Bible 8. He was "corrected" by Red, who sent him the picture with the location of 11 stars marked. In 2005, J. E. Sawyer tried to clarify the issue by saying that according to Tramell Ray Isaac, who rendered the intro cinematic for Fallout said that they just took the old colonial flag with 13 stars in a circle and added a new star in the middle.
Sawyer's explanation was widely accepted until 2008, when Bethesda Softworks released Fallout 3, which features a flag with 12 stars in a circle and one in the middle, which is currently the only version of the flag fully seen in a released game.

The United States of America is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district. The country is situated mostly in central North America, where its forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, with Canada to its east and Russia to the west across the Bering Strait, and the state of Hawaii is in the mid-Pacific. The United States also possesses several territories, or insular areas, that are scattered around the Caribbean and Pacific.
Ice hockey, universally referred to as hockey, is less popular than baseball, basketball and football, but is still considered a major sport. The National Hockey League is the major professional league in North America, and 24 of its 30 teams are based in the United States; the other six are located in Canada. Always a cultural mainstay in some northern areas, hockey has gained tenuous footholds in regions like the Carolinas, Tampa Bay, Florida and Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas in recent years, as the National Hockey League pursued a policy of expansion. Recreational ice hockey on a wide scale, as well as hockey at the high school and college levels, is generally confined to hockey country, specifically New England and the Great Lakes region, but recreational leagues do exist in large- and medium-sized metropolitan areas throughout the United States. Hockey legends include Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe (all of whom are Canadians who played either extensively or exclusively for U.S.-based pro teams).
On the international level, the United States is continuously ranked in the elite of the world and part of the Big Seven along with Canada, Russia, Finland, Slovakia, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

In 2026 the United States was fractured by the detonation of several nuclear devices in 25 of its cities by the Optimum Movement. Blaming a foreign power for this, what remained of the US government and its allies declared war, beginning World War III. The country was reformed in 2033 with 52 states by the Optimum who continued to control the country until 2079. (Novel: Federation, Star Trek: The Adventures of Argus: "Nuclear Time", TNG: "The Royale")
