The Ambassador-class was a type of Federation heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the early to late 24th century. (ST reference: Star Trek Encyclopedia)

Service history

The Ambassador-class was designed to be a replacement for the aging fleet of Excelsior-class and Constellation-class vessels which had been in service for over three decades, and to create a true front-line heavy cruiser. Between 2322 and 2360, the Ambassador-class heavy cruisers were the primary capital ships of Starfleet. In 2372, Starfleet stopped production refitting of these ships. (TNG reference: Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, ST roleplay module: Starships)

The prototype of the class, the USS Ambassador, was launched in the early 2320s [1], and several other vessels were in service by 2324, including the USS Gandhi. (ST video game: Starship Creator)

One of the most famous ships of the class was the USS Enterprise-C, the fourth starship to bear the name, which was launched in 2332 under the command of Captain Rachel Garrett. The Enterprise was destroyed in 2344 while responding to a distress call from a Klingon outpost on Narendra III. Upon arrival at the outpost they discovered that it was under attack by several Romulan warbirds. Regardless of the odds, the Enterprise put up a valiant fight and its act of sacrifice kick-started the peace process between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. (TNG episodes: "episode", "Yesterday's Enterprise"; TOS novel: Vulcan's Heart)

Although the Ambassador-class was five decades old by the 2370s, many ships of the class continued to be in service, albeit refitted with the latest technologies which could be found aboard the more up-to-date models such as the Galaxy-class explorers. (NF novel: Into the Void)

Known vessels

The role-playing supplement Starfleet Operations Manual lists slightly different stats than those listed here. They list the following size measurements (all in meters): l - 525, h - 361, and w - 133. The crew complement is 900. This class is equipped with a Type 7 Warp Drive, Type 9 Phaser Arrays, and Type 5 Photon Torpedoes.

  • The RPG The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon, published by Last Unicorn Games after they had lost their Star Trek licence lists the USS Finian (NCC-47955) as an Ambassador-class starship.

  1. The video game Bridge Commander gives 2325 as the date this class entered service whilst the Last Unicorn RPG gives a date of 2322.

The Ambassador class is a type of Starfleet starship, heavy cruiser in nature, first utilized in the mid 24th century. (TNG: "Conspiracy")

Construction on the USS Ambassador started in the early 24th century.

The USS Enterprise-C will go down in history as one of the most famous Ambassador-class starships. In 2344, the Enterprise fought four Romulan warbirds at Narendra III, a Klingon colony. Enterprise Captain Rachel Garrett sacrificed herself and her crew in the attempt to defend the colony: an action the Klingon High Council felt was honorable. With that action, the Klingon Empire ended hostile actions against the Federation, reaching a peace agreement in 2352. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise")

The Ambassador-class starship has been an asset to Starfleet, participating in battles against the Romulans, Borg and Dominion. (DS9: "Emissary", "You Are Cordially Invited")

Technical data

With the typical saucer section-stardrive section-warp nacelles configuration, the Ambassador-class was a follow-on from the Excelsior-class and a design that inspired the Galaxy-class. Phasers and photon torpedoes could be fired in arcs from the saucer and stardrive sections. Like most starships of its era, the Ambassador-class starship typically utilized early LCARS systems with flat-panel stations. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise")

Crewmembers could have their family members move aboard after six months' service aboard the ship. (TNG: "Second Chances")

The Ambassador-class starship, much like any other Starfleet ship, has undergone minor interior and exterior alterations from the original design over the years. These include:

  • Shifting the saucer section slightly aft;
  • Shifting the nacelle pylon assembly aft the same distance;
  • Adding new impulse engines (reflected through the change from blue to red glow);
  • Upgrading the lower sensor dome;
  • Modifying the deflector dish;
  • Widening the shuttlebay;
  • Adding a secondary shuttlebay on the stardrive section's aft'; and
  • Upgrading to a modern LCARS system. (TNG: "Data's Day", "Redemption II"; DS9: "Emissary")

Main Bridge

The command bridge of an Ambassador class starship

Like most starships, the bridge was located on the Ambassador-class starship's top of the saucer section. In 2344, the commanding officer had his or her captain's chair in the bridge's center, with tactical and helm forward on either side. The viewscreen was on the forward wall with a console directly below it. Ops, engineering and science stations stood amongst the aft bridge stations. Access to the bridge was gained through two access ways on the port and starboard sides of the bridge, respectively. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise")
