Alpha Centauri was the Alpha Centauran delegate to Peladon.

Alpha Centauri first came to Peladon on the Committee of Assessment to review their petition to enter the Galactic Federation. It aided the Doctor in defeating Hepesh and Arcturus. (DW: The Curse of Peladon)

Fifty years later, Alpha Centauri was the Federation Ambassador to Peladon where it helped the Doctor defeat the plans of Eckersley and the renegade Ice Warriors. (DW: The Monster of Peladon)

Characteristics

Although it had a female voice, Alpha was neither male nor female; it was a hermaphrodite hexapod according to the Doctor. (DW: The Curse of Peladon) Nevertheless, the Doctor referred to it with masculine pronouns, and had a penchant for addressing it as "my dear fellow". (DW: The Monster of Peladon)

Like like the rest of its race, Alpha Centauri was a natural pacifist.

Alpha Centauri was a trinary star system consisting of the three companion stars Rigil Kentaurus, Quindar and Proxima. At a little over four light years distant, this is the closest star system to Earth in the Sol system. By the 24th century, the system's three inhabited planets and various space stations and outposts supported a population of over 21 billion sentient individuals. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual; ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation; TOS novels: Crisis on Centaurus, Time for Yesterday)

The Federation worlds here are sometimes also referred to simply as Alpha Centauri. According to Starfleet Intelligence outpost maps, this system's coordinates are 1.27N 2.92W, placing it in the Starfleet Intelligence sector 1. (RPG reference: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

During the Dominion War, Alpha Centauri was a pivotal planet in the Federation's defense, with its supply lines to Vulcan being the Federation's "life's blood", as Admiral Sitak told Benjamin Sisko in 2374. Captain Sisko thought it was a mistake to devote so many ships to protect them from the Jem'Hadar in a bid to "defend our way to victory". (DS9 novelization: ...Sacrifice of Angels)

Later that year, Alpha Centauri, along with Vulcan, Andor and Tellar Prime, were threatened by the fall of Betazed to the Dominion. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight")

The Alpha Centauri system is a trinary system with thirteen planets, the nearest star system to the Sol system, 4.3 light years distant. The first star system beyond Sol to be colonized by humans, it was home to two very similar indigenous humanoid races, the Centaurans of Alpha Centauri IV and the Centaurians of Alpha Centauri VII.

History

In the year 2001, astronomers on Earth, using ground-based adaptive optic telescopes, resolved at least two bodies in the Alpha Centauri system: two large planets caught up in a complex, oscillating orbital pattern around the A and B stars. Over the next century, several other planets were discovered in the system. One was the size of Mercury, locked in an eccentric orbit around Alpha Centauri A. The other two were Earth-sized worlds in interweaving orbital paths around Alpha Centauri B. (TOS novel: Federation (novel))

In 2064, Zefram Cochrane traveled from Earth to the Alpha Centauri system aboard the SS Bonaventure and landed on Centauri B II. Two years later, Cochrane was aboard the UESP Enterprise when it made contact with the inhabitants of Alpha Centauri IV and VII.

By the early 22nd century, humans had established several outposts in the Alpha Centauri system. Zefram Cochrane moved to the system from Earth in 2078. He left the system in 2119 for an unknown destination. He was presumed dead in space. (TOS: "Metamorphosis", Federation novel; ENT: "Broken Bow")

In 2256, an additional Federation colony was established in the Alpha Centauri system. (TOS novel: Starfleet Academy (novel))

Following the fall of Betazed the system was defended by the First and Fourteenth Fleet along with the remnants of the Nineteenth Fleet. (The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon)

Alternate timelines

In an alternate timeline, the human outpost at Alpha Centauri was wiped out by the Xindi in 2154, following their destruction of Earth. (ENT: "Twilight")

In another alternate timeline caused by the death of Gabriel Bell, Romulan transmissions were detected in the vicinity of Alpha Centauri in 2371. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I")

Background

  • As of 2010, human scientists haven't figured out if Proxima Centauri is orbiting Alpha Centauri A and B or just passes them.
