The AT-AA had four stubby legs and lizard-like locomotion, along with a low profile not seen in other Imperial walkers, which made them harder targets for aircraft. On most models, the only weapon was a powerful turreted flak pod, capable of blanketing the sky with different types of ordnance. Other versions could be equipped with one or three rocket-launching tubes.
Some variation had flak pods replaced with concussion missile launchers. The AT-AA also carried complex electronic counter measures that could scramble missile guidance systems, thus lowering the risk of incoming missile strikes.
The walker saw heavy action during the Galactic Civil War, where it was used against aircraft, but was useless against any ground vehicles. Even with blaster rifle-mounts sometimes affixed to the walker, the AT-AA relied heavily on escorting vehicles.
During the Battle of Kalaan, AT-AA batteries would protect the armored columns from airborne enemies, bringing down scores of Alliance T-47 airspeeders. AT-AAs were used even in the time of the New Republic, where they defended the galactic capital for the New Republic Defense Force.
