Dr. Curt Engstrom worked for S.T.A.R. Labs in Keystone City. They obtained Dr. Alchemy's Philosopher's Stone, a stone with the capability of transmuting the elements. The scientific firm shaved off a microscopic portion of the stone, using it for the construction of a miniature medical computer that could go through the bloodstream, transmuting free radicals into iron, curing blood disease. Engstrom stole the computer and the Stone, ransoming them. He was later arrested. They did not recovere the computer chip.
Engstrom tried to use Moe "Mouthpiece" Migliani, the famous jailhouse lawyer, to get out. He told Migliani the location of the microcomputer. The lawyer purposely botched the case so he could get his own hands on the chip instead.
Engstrom did escape, however, and using the Philosopher's Stone, he devised a costume similar to that of the original Dr. Alchemy. Calling himself the Alchemist, he went after Migliani in a bank. Police Commissioner Hotchkiss asked the Flash to escort Migliani around, to protect him from Engstrom. However, Migiliani was scheduled to appear on WKEY's Fernando talk show. The Alchemist tracked him there. After temporarily stalling the Flash by turning the nitrogen around him into gold, Engstrom captured Migliani. The Flash followed them, and was able to defeat Engstrom. Wally noticed that the watch that Migliani had given him earlier was not keeping proper time, which clued him that the chip was in fact inside the watch, proving that Migliani had stolen it. So both Engstrom and Migliani were put behind bars.

Alchemists use chemistry tables to combine roots, gems, soft metals, loams, and candles. These combinations create combat art essences used by Fighters to enhance their combat skills, poisons for Scouts to apply to weapons they use while adventuring, potions for general consumption by all players, and adornments for all players to add to equipment they use.

The Chemist (薬師 Yakushi lit. Dispenser or アイテム士 Aitemushi lit. Item User), also known as an Alchemist (錬金術士 Renkinjyustushi lit. Alchemist or 精錬術士 Seirenjyutsushi lit. Refining Technician), is a job that appears in various games in the series. Chemists are often characterized as wearing yellow robes. Their main weapons are daggers, guns, and rods. They are best known for their abilities involving various items in the game. Usually, this involves having an exclusive access to special items, doubling the potency of recovery items, and most importantly, their unique ability Mix allows them to combine two items into one. They also can heal party members for free.
Notable Chemists include Rikku from Final Fantasy X and Meeth from Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates.

The Chemist is a job that is available from the beginning of the game. It is the only job that is able to use items initially, and all magic-based jobs stem from the Chemist.
The Alchemist is a job exclusive to Nu Mou. It uses various status-inflicting attacks as well as the powerful Flare and Meteor spells.
The Nu Mou job, Alchemist is back for another spin in Tactics A2.
The Final Fantasy Tactics A2 development team also originally intended to include a Transmuter job for the Nu Mou. Like the original Chemist, the Transmuter would of mixed varying items together for different effects. But due to the extensive amount of time required to test every ability, it was scrapped at the last moment and was never implemented in the finalized product. The Transmuter sprite can still be seen in auction houses and the Luck-Stick seller also resembles a Nu Mou with this job.
In the Duel Colosseum, when selected, the Chemist job card will protect the player from status card effects, nullifying these and preventing them from appearing in the selection area.
