The message received when the level to obtain the Inferno Adze has been reached.

The Inferno Adze [Pronounced "Add-Ze]" is a reward from the All Fired Up minigame. Players need to have lit all 14 beacons in order to obtain this reward. The Adze is one of the first, if not the first, hybrid tool in the game. It functions as a Dragon hatchet while woodcutting and as a Rune pickaxe while mining. The release of the Dragon pickaxe brought about a great deal of controversy to the Inferno Adze as many players wanted the Adze upgraded so it matched the speed of the Dragon pickaxe. Jagex responded by saying that there were no plans to upgrade the Adze unless popular vote said otherwise.

To use the Inferno Adze as a hatchet, players need 61 Woodcutting and 92 Firemaking. To use it as a pickaxe, players need 41 Mining and 92 Firemaking. It can also be used as a weapon with 1 Attack and 92 Firemaking. The Inferno Adze's requirement of 92 Firemaking (to light 14 beacons) is the highest skill level needed to wield any piece of equipment, excluding the skillcapes.

Should one lose the Inferno Adze, they must light all the 14 beacons again to re-obtain it. Lighting all the beacons while already having the Inferno Adze does not reward the player with another one.

The Adze's dual ability makes it useful for passing obstacles in the Abyss.

Note: Although a player can obtain the Inferno Adze by using orange spicy stews to light the beacons, they will not be able to wield nor use it until they have a Firemaking level of 92 or more.

Note: If you die with the inferno adze it will not appear on your gravestone.

Special effect

While woodcutting, the Adze has 30% chance of instantly incinerating a log as it is cut. If this happens, the log is instantly burned, giving the player full Woodcutting and Firemaking experience, including any bonus experience from the Ring of fire and the Flame gloves. This makes the Inferno Adze an excellent tool for training Woodcutting and Firemaking in conjunction, and the reduced banking time enables faster Woodcutting experience. However, when chopping more valuable logs such as magic logs, it may be undesirable for them to be destroyed, which makes the Inferno Adze less suitable for those who wish to train their Woodcutting for a profit. When using the adze as a pickaxe there is no special effect although it takes level 41 Mining and level 92 Firemaking to use it.

  • Although the requirements for the Inferno Adze are only skill based, the player will gain combat levels from rewards of the quests required to obtain it.
  • If both a hatchet and an Inferno Adze are in a player's inventory, the player's character will use the best hatchet available instead of the Inferno Adze.
  • For a short time, the Inferno Adze could be used as a pickaxe in free to play worlds.
  • Prior to the removal of these events in the random event revamp, the Adze could not be broken by ents and exploding rocks.
  • Adzes have a slightly different animation compared to the other hatchets, and also produce a significantly different sound effect when woodcutting.
  • Despite the Adze having a higher stab attack bonus than slash or crush, players cannot stab with it.
  • The Adze can neither be used to mine obsidian stone slabs nor cut trees on Miscellania or Etceteria.
  • While the Adze is similar to the Dragon hatchet's cutting rate, it is still less efficient at mining than the dragon pickaxe. When asked about this, Jagex said this was because the adze "is a woodcutting tool with a side benefit of being able to be used as a pickaxe." (Recent Updates FAQ, 09/09/09)
  • It has the highest level requirement to wield an item in the game (92 Firemaking) other than the skillcapes.
