Full Name: Adolf Hitler
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Born: April 20, 1889
Died: April 30, 1945
Affiliation: Nazi Germany
Marital Status: Married
Spouse(s): Eva Braun
Final Assignment: Führer, Nazi German State

Adolf Hitler (April 20, 1889 - April 30, 1945) was a 20th century human dictator who was born in Austria. He led the Nazi party in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, and later seized total control of the German nation.

Hitler was able to tap into the anger the German people felt over the reparations forced on their nation following World War I. The power-mad Hitler used the Nazi party as a tool for governmental domination. Hitler's ruthlessness would be compared to others, such as Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Maltuvis, Ferris, Krotus, Lee Kuan, Khan Noonien Singh and the Vulcans of the Last-of-all-Cities colony. He also initiated the attempted systematic genocide of Humans of Jewish descent -- the Holocaust, which led to the deaths of six million Jews alongside approximately six million other enemies of the Reich. (TOS episodes: What Are Little Girls Made Of?, Patterns of Force, Whom Gods Destroy; EV comic: Cloak and Dagger, historical accounts.)

In the late 1930s, the Hitler and the Nazis turned their aggression outward when they began the conquest of Europe. Hitler tried to justify this in 1938 by saying, "We need breathing room." In 2293 the Klingon General Chang would repeat this line. Kirk replied by stating, "Earth: Hitler, 1938." (TOS movie: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

In the face of Hitler's aggression other nations, including the Soviet Union, Great Britain, Canada, and later the United States formed an alliance to stop Hitler in his drive for conquest. The Allies drove the Nazis back to Germany and defeated them by 1945, but at a cost of millions of lives and large scale devastation of much of Europe and other Nazi occupied lands. Hitler committed suicide as Allied troops entered the city. (TOS episode: "Patterns of Force")

Historical legacy

For centuries to follow, it was debated whether the removal of Hitler from history would have prevented World War II. Leonard McCoy dismissed this idea, and the "one-man-as-catalyst" theory of history, arguing that war was part of the human condition until the Human race outgrew it. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)

Historian John Gill tried to establish a more benign form of Hitler's governance on the planet Ekos in the mid 23rd century, with poor results. (TOS episode: "Patterns of Force")

Cort Enaren accused Deputy Presidential Chief of Staff Ashanté Phiri of comparing him to Hitler when he tried to end Federation aid to Cardassia in 2380. (ST novel: Articles of the Federation)

Alternate Timelines

An alternate timeline Hitler tours a conquered NYC.

In two different alternate timelines, Hitler was much more successful.

In one altered timeline, Hitler's government would receive assistance from the Na'kuhl - one of the factions fighting in the Temporal Cold War. The Na'kuhl agent Vosk was able to alter history starting in 1916, when future Russian leader Vladimir Lenin was assassinated, which in turn prevented the Russian Revolution from taking place. As a result, by the late 1930s Russia was in disarray and Hitler was able to concentrate on western Europe, conquering not only France, but Great Britain as well. Hitler was then able to turn his attention to the United States, conquering the eastern United States - including Washington and New York City. With the assistance of temporal agent Daniels, the crew of the Enterprise (NX-01) was able to defeat Vosk and destroy the Na'kuhl temporal conduit, thus restoring the timeline. (ENT episode Zero Hour, Storm Front Parts I and II)

Another alternate timeline was created when suffering from an accidental cordrazine overdose, Dr. McCoy entered the Guardian of Forever, and wound up in 1930s Earth. While there, he saved a woman named Edith Keeler from a traffic accident. Keeler would become a renowned pacifist whose efforts delayed the entry of the United States into World War II. Without U.S. involvement, Hitler's government had time to complete the heavy water experiments and missile tests, winning the race to develop nuclear weapons. With such advantages, Hitler was able to win the war, and as a result the United Federation of Planets was never formed. Fortunately, Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock had followed McCoy back in time, and were able to prevent McCoy from saving Keeler's life. When Keeler died, the timeline was restored to normal. (TOS episode: "The City on the Edge of Forever")

March to War

Spear of Destiny

In 1940, Hitler acquired the powerful mystical artifact known as the Spear of Destiny [3]. He used it to try to kill Green Lantern (Alan Scott) and the Flash (Jay Garrick). The attempt was unsuccessful due to the timely intervention of the Spectre (Jim Corrigan).

Hitler and henchmen look on

In 1941, Hitler allied himself with the Dragon King, creating a mystic barrier around German and Japanese territories. This barrier successfully protected them from the intervention of any magic based superhero.

Near the end of the war, Hitler attempted to use the Spear of Destiny to link the fate of the Nordic gods' Ragnarok to that of the universe. Immediately following the events of the Crisis On Infinite Earths, the mystical power of the Spectre, who was lying dormant following his battle with the Anti-Monitor, was tapped into by the Spear in 1945 as Hitler cast the spell, and the universe was destroyed through time as the Nordic gods lost the Ragnarok. Dr. Fate transported the Justice Society members of that present time to Asgard of 1945 to change the course of the Ragnarok to keep the universe from being destroyed. As a result of the change, Hitler discovered that his plans were defeated.

During the Battle of Berlin, the Unknown Soldier is sent on a mission to stop a Nazi super-weapon, vampiric octopuses called "Nosferatu". On April 29, 1945, he infiltrated Hitler's bunker, killing him and assuming the dictator's identity in order to call off the weapon's deployment. He then made Hitler's death look like a suicide.[4]

Powers and Abilities

Adolf Hitler was an amateur occultist who possessed a small degree of mystical prowess and intuition.

Hitler was an expert political strategist and tactician. He was also schooled in the fields of writing and painting. While serving time in prison, Hitler wrote a best selling autobiography entitled Mein Kampf (English translation: My Struggle or My Fight).

Strength level

At the height of his career, Hitler possessed the strength of a middle-aged man who engaged in moderate regular exercise.

Spear of Destiny

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-Two era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985-86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.

  • The Marvel Comics version of Hitler led a similar career to the real world Hitler, but suffered a completely different fate -- the original Human Torch killed Hitler in self defence, inside of Hitler's Berlin Bunker. A Nazi scientist named Arnim Zola cloned Hitler’s body and the clone resurfaced years later to plague the Fantastic Four as the Hate-Monger.
  • In the parallel dimension known as Earth-50, The Authority member, the Midnighter, traveled backwards in time to kill Adolf Hitler as a young corporal. He failed in this endeavor, but met Hitler again in April of 1945 and witnessed the Fuhrer take his own life.
  • In JSA: The Golden Age, Hitler's brain was transplanted into the body of Daniel Dunbar prior to its transformation into Dynaman.
  • Despite the fact Adolf Hitler was and is a real man, he can be considered a different person in New Earth, as histor was rewritten during the Crisis. Another person differently displayed is Ronald Reagan, who disliked metas.

Appearances in Other Media

In the DC animated television series Justice League, Adolf Hitler made a brief, non-speaking cameo appearance in the three-part movie episode "The Savage Time". In the story, immortal villain Vandal Savage used time travel technology to send equipment and information from the 21st century to himself at an earlier era, allowing his younger self the ability to subvert control of Nazi Germany and take command of the Third Reich. Savage defeated Hitler and kept him in a state of suspended animation in a special containment cell in Berlin. Hitler was first seen in Chapter One, but also appeared in the episode recap at the beginning of Chapter Two. Hitler was then released from his frozen prison when Vandal Savage seemingly died to the German people.
