History

Abe Crane has devoted his life to the American intelligence community. In 1949 he joined the Central Intelligence Agency. Some thirty-odd years later, he was recruited into the ranks of Checkmate, taking the position of Rook. At Rook Control, Abe Crane assigned various agents (or knights) for different assignments. He personally hand-picked former treasury agent and special forces operative Roger Dayton to become a knight for a mission involving stolen printing plates. Crane instructed Dayton to track down a group of counterfeiters who had been using government plates and destroy their operation. Dayton only partially succeeded on the mission and Crane admonished him for his lack of delicacy.
