"A Doomsday Like Any Other" is the second story in the A Burning House anthology and is set in an alternate mirror universe.

Captain Kirk is DEAD!!! Slain by his first officer and captain's woman over the Halkan affair. Now Spock is in command of the ISS Enterprise and he sets out on a plan to rebuild the Terran Empire in the form of the United Federation of Planets.
But before he can began enacting his grand scheme, Spock and the Enterprise have been ordered to proceed to the Rigel system at maximum warp. Scattered reports and rumors indicate that a "planet killer" is crossing through the core worlds of the Empire and is devouring planets in its wake.
