"A Doomsday Like Any Other" is the second story in the A Burning House anthology and is set in an alternate mirror universe.

Summary

Captain Kirk is DEAD!!! Slain by his first officer and captain's woman over the Halkan affair. Now Spock is in command of the ISS Enterprise and he sets out on a plan to rebuild the Terran Empire in the form of the United Federation of Planets.

But before he can began enacting his grand scheme, Spock and the Enterprise have been ordered to proceed to the Rigel system at maximum warp. Scattered reports and rumors indicate that a "planet killer" is crossing through the core worlds of the Empire and is devouring planets in its wake.

Background information

• This episode takes place a few days after TOS: "Mirror, Mirror" following Spock and Moreau's assassination of Kirk.
• Although the USS Enterprise's encounter with the "planet killer" in TOS: "The Doomsday Machine" occurs before the events of "Mirror, Mirror" in the primary universe timeline, in the mirror universe, the "planet killer" remains undetected until she approaches the Rigel system.
• The opening segment of this story features the mirror universe versions of the USS Tamerlane and her crew from the Tamerlane fan comic series.
